Hey guys!

The diesel I just picked up is an 82 diesel with the red block on it. That also means it has the coarse injectors that are too long to bolt up a turbo from a 6.5L. (I have access to a complete 93 6.5TD that has a bad bottom end to get all the parts from)

Is there any way of swapping out those long injectors with a short pair?

Russell, we need to get together.:D I'm in Stony Plain, about the same distance out of Edmonton in the other direction. There's an '84 or '85 6.2 truck in the Edmonton Pick 'n Pull right now that would have the heads you need, or if you feel like driving a bit further I have a pair you can have for the drive. My '80 is probably going to get the same swap you're in the middle of once I get caught up on my other projects . . .

Ha, I'm actually going to be robbing that 6.2 truck of it's wiring this afternoon :D Did you notice they have two 5.7L diesels there too? Never seen one of those critters in person before yesterday...

If you have a good set of heads, I'd happily make the trip out your way to pick them up!

It sounds like your 80 is a lot like mine, mine is a GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 with 350 / SM465 / NP241 10 bolt front, 14 bolt rear. Lifted 4" up front, and 5.5" out back.

Funny thing is that my donor truck is also a 93 1 ton 6.5td / NV4500 rig! The 6.5 is toast, it has a nasty bottom end knock when you manage to get it started, and smokes like nothing I've seen before. Only runs on a few cylinders at first. However, once it warmed up, it actually ran pretty nice, all the smoke dissapeared, and the engine quieted right down. NV4500 shifts really nicely, despite having a big crack on the bellhousing by the slave cylinder...

I think I'm gonna trade the transmission off for a 95+ version though. I don't badly need that super low first gear, and an internal slave setup strikes me as a very attractive deal. The 95+ master cylinders are easily retrofitted into the older trucks, and the clutch line should bolt straight up... Solves all my problems with needing an advance adapters bellhousing, and some sort of slave cylinder retrofit. My NP241 should bolt straight up, but I'll need to find a longer front driveshaft, and get my rear one cut down.

Why would you need an advance adapters bell? The one on the NV you have right now will bolt straight up, and the crack is no big deal if you know someone with a TIG welder. The difference is between the bell and the tranny, and since you have both already there's no big deal.

Did you also see that later 90's truck with the engine and tranny gone? 97 I think, heavy 3/4 ton std. Means it had a new pattern NV4500 in it, and I missed it:mad:. Ah well, someone else got a good deal. I'll check those heads out too, make sure they're worth taking. You planning a rebuild, or just bolt them on stock?

Yeah, I noticed that truck too! I did admit I crawled underneath just in case they forgot to take it or something, lol

I am not so much concerned about the crack in the bell housing as I am about slave to front drive shaft clearance concerns... It would also simplify things if I could run an internal slave cylinder (despite how much some people hate them, I've never had any trouble with them so far)

I'm hoping to do this as budget friendly as I can, but I don't want to sacrifice quality. I'm planning on taking the heads off the 93 to see what kind of shape they are on before I do anything.

Tonight I got most of the accessories taken off the 6.2L. I plan to use the serpentine stuff from the 93, except get a 99 water pump and a dual thermostat crossover to up the cooling abilities a bit.

I already have a brand new hydroboost power steering pump, and 110 amp alternator to bolt on :) Also have a brand new set of injectors, and a brand new set of 60G glow plugs.

I've got a ton of grease scraping / cleaning / painting to do yet, but hopefully by the end of tomorrow night I'll have it torn most of the way down and have checked the webbing for cracks.

Hey Russell, how's the project coming?

I'm going to attempt a mechanical clutch setup on my NV 'cause I don't want to pony up for a newer style tranny and a hydraulic clutch seems like one more thing to go wrong. Dunno, might regret it down the road, but I only need the clutch pedal to get rolling anyway ;) and my cab already has a mechanical pedal in it. Means I can sell off my 80's body style hydro clutch stuff and make a little money back.

Once I'm done my exams and I can focus on wrenching, we'll have to co-ordinate some trips to Pick-n-pull and compare notes :D

I haven't even touched my engine since the night I last posted an update -- Just getting into the thick of mid term exams here at school now, so I've been pretty busy...

One big update is that my donor truck will be arriving this weekend. I have every intention of getting the engine and transmission pulled out this coming Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Do you, or anyone you know, have access to a sandblasting cabinet big enough to stuff the engine accessory bracketry, the intake etc into? I'd like to shine this thing right up before I put it in...

hehe, I wish. I've looked at a couple of small units for home use, but that's about it. Actually, there's a guy in Stony I could talk to. I'd like to do the same thing.

I was considering the unit from Princess Auto when it was on sale earlier, but didn't have the funds to grab it at the time... I have the big compressor and air drier needed, but no cabinet, lol
