Theres a cool spot near my house that id never seen before, it has 3 nice climbs one better than the other, so we decidid to try it out, me in my truck and my buddies ranger to test out his positraction.

I had no 4wd, no front driveshaft...

On the first climb i was short half way, the soil is very powdery and loose, the sencond time had a shortage of gas, the third i gunned it and got up.yieiiiii....

Next hill didnt even try it, youll need 4wd for sure.

The third one was the on that crapped all over my hopes...its a mix of the hills, bumps, rocks (huge by the way) and loose dirt...excelent for any off roader, i didnt even got through the first hill i started slipping, second try gunned it a bit no luck....the third is the best right?? WROOONNNGGGG.... got all 3/4 of the way started loosing traction and again the car died on me, so it was a mess backing up couldnt stop it with engine not running...

The main thing is this...one of two the pemp or the carb crapped out on me every time..... i have a mechanicall pump (carter) do i need to try out another brand, or go electric, ive been told holley suck if used daily, they tend to work when only demanded at moments, like drags or pulls..

What tou you guys think...

I think with a front driveshaft you won't have to use nearly as much throttle and violent bouncing to make the climbs....

A properly tuned Q-Jet is about as good as it gets for an offroading carb, but it sounds like you have other things to spend your money on first. :deal:

:usaflag:

What Greg Said. The fuel pump doesn't have anything to do with stalling when climbing a hill.

because it flooded with gas hence why holleys suck for that type of wheeling. you can mod them a littel bit to help like lowering the floats a bit and runnin a different vent tube but they still have issues.
if it dies like like that hold it floared and dont let up til it starts and crank it, that said try a bit and let the starter cool and then try again all while holding the throttle to the floor it gets more air and clears out faster so it will start.Even works on hills, remember when it starts to catch to let off a bit and clear it out dont hold it redlined.

So what would be a good carb, i had a quadrajet before but took it off and gave it to my dads truck.

either try and tune up the holley do the changes i recommended and deal with the short comings. How often do you do hill climbs that severe that will determine the choice. get an eldelbrock i hate them and throw them away or a q jet also i hate them they are nice but i am a holley fan parts easy to get and easy to tune my main thig with the non holley is all the extra vacume lines you have to block off. I do some preaty good hill climbs and have not had really any issues if i change it i will go fi but dont see that happening anytime soon.

What helps a lot on the Holley carbs is to get some rubber tubing slide it over the back bowl vent. Bend it so that it is just a little shorter than the air cleaner lid and slide the other end over the front bowl vent. Now take a small piece out of the center of the tube. You now have a new elevated vent tube. Lowering float level helps but you might have to change jetting afterward.
You can get float bowl baffles and foam to reduce the fuel movement. Holley sells spring loaded needle and seats that are supposed to reduce the needle coming of the seat when bouncing.

Feeling like a champ......

Went back to that place and nailled it... changed the fuel filter and thats it, only had trouble once but still the truck climbed strong:D
