SHORT TAIL OR LONG TAIL? help!!!

So brother has a short tail turbo 350 and my tranny is on it's way out. We took a peek underneath to see if it was a short or a long tail and was surprised to see we couldn't tell because of the transfer case. What type of tranny came in a 1971 K5? mine's an automatic. Any info is welcome. Please help a newbie in this 4 wheel drive world.........

Judging by the title of your thread I thought you might have been talking about a Mullet for a moment j/k sorry, I just had to.

If the 71 has an automatic, more than likely it is a TH350 to NP205.
