I was just GIVEN a set of shorty SBC headers, and was wondering, what's the consensus on short tube headers on a 90 v1500 TBI? and will the stock pipes bolt up? Temporarily, until I recover from the trans rebuild.

thats a rather unanswerable question. It all depends on your factory manifolds and whether or not the shorties are application specific. Since you have them on hand hold them up to your engine and see if they will fit.

Im pretty sure theyve never made sharty headers for our trucks.

However some guys do use the newer shorty headers with a few mods when they dont want to use long tube headers.

They did and edelborck makes them. They sucked balls without some modification but the do bolt up. Mine is an 86' K10 pickup with a SBC but yes they made them and with SMOG tubes to boot. There really is no way to tell that they fit unless you bolt them on. I recommend staying with the manifolds if they don't leak. The headers were a chore to get them to seal.

i know good headers with a thick flange aren't problematic. I could use every bit of power I can steal from this thing though. These headers exit straight down and the manifolds do not. Figuring these won't work.

I think you answered your own question right there.
