is this a desireable axle? can i get a 4.56 gearset for it and myabe a traction aid? would building this up be too expensive over a 14b? its down to 75 bucks on CL now but this ad had the pic. i would biuld this up over the course of this winter or even spring and maybe throw it under in the summer. can you tell where i came from just by the pic or maybe a wms measurement? what kind if ebrake is needed? sorry for all of the questions but i have been watching this for a while just drop and drop. thanks for all the help!!

If that is really a D70Hd it is well worth that price, I would snatch it up myself if local. Gears to 7.17 & detroit & some others are available.

Problem is: that axle is 73" or so WMS-WMS which is too wide for anything but a Dually or for running H-1 wheels on a fleetside truck or K5. You would also have to move the perches to use it in a non 1-ton vehicle.

I would try to get the BOM # off the axle tube to verify it is a 70HD. If it is it will have 4" axle tubes & 35 spline shafts. It would have been stock under a full width chevy dually. Unsure on the yaers used. Tarrussel would be someone good to talk to to get some real specific answers.

PM FOR MUD he runs a D70. he runs a 4.88 ratio so I'm sure a 4.56 is a possibility, but after that they jump to something like 5.86. disc brake kits are not as common. the price is right. covers are 60 covers, thats a bonus. I have seen lockers go real cheap on ebay for a 70.

:dunno:

uhh well if i can only run H1s, i dont have a 60. probably wont for a while but what about a dually hub from an IFS truck to put on my 10B, i have heard that may work. whats its general value if its a true 70hd. and where can i run the numbers to verify.

They're are so many variances of a 70 that I never really fooled with them.If it has been for sale for a long time and the price keeps dropping there's a reason why.Something's wrong or it is a undesirable axle.Be careful!!!

Search dana expert on google, I can't remember the website. You can run the BOM # there.

I run that same axle in my trail rig. Don't worry about gear selection if it is a HD. If they make it for a 14 bolt they make it for that axle & then some. I run 5.13's in mine. 5.38, 5.89, 6.16 & 7.17 are available.

Don't know about the dually 10 bolt, I have a drw 60f in mine.

In my experience people shy away from them because they don't know. If you get the facts before you buy you will have nothing to worry about.

By the way the 70Hd is one of those axles that you can buy cheap, unless you are looking for one. Some times they are hard to find, & I have seen them sell for up to $500. That is not the norm though.

Almost true....They don't make a 5.38 gear set for a 70HD.
If you know someone who does, let me know.
