My over all goal: 1 ton Axles under my baby... Must haves: locker, 4:10 or lower gears. I use this vehicle for driving around town, hunting and wheeling.

I have a line on the following and actually know the guy from high school seems to be pretty honest...

Kingpin chevy front 60-professionally assembled. 5.38:1 yukon gears, highsteer, 1 ton tie rod, disk brakes, detroit locker
Corp. 14 bolt rear - professionally assembled. 5.38:1 yukon gears, drum brakes, detroit locker
all stock chevy brackets intact.

I have him talked down to under $1500... Should I but it? He had a matching 14 bolt rear that sold.

If Ido buy it what are my best rear end options? I see several dana 70s, but do not think they come with 5.38 as a gear option? What about a Dana 60 rear end out of a van? I can get one complete with drum brakes for $200 then rebuild? Or Should I hold out for a 14 bolt?

I am pretty certain that not matter what I will be chaning out a carrier to get down to the 5.38 gears.

So 1500 for just the front? Thats a fair price as it's a built axle assuming it is ready to bolt it.

I'm not sure on the D70 as far as gear ratio's and I know there are several variations.

IMO I'd steer away from the 60 rears as 14 Bolts are stronger, cheaper and more plentiful.

Cheapest bet is to just find a 14B for cheap and regear lock and disc it. 5.38 thick gears will go on the 4.10 and down carrier.

Yeah 1500 for the front and I am going to double check fit. I am pretty certain it is what I want. I also have a 14 bolt rear with 4.56 gears that I am looking at for $100.

That's a decent price for the a built front D60 assuming everything is in good shape.

For the rear, just get a 14FF. Do some research to verify but the last time I checked all 5.38 gear sets on the market for the 14FF were "thick" sets, meaning they work on the 4.10-down carrier (would not work on a 4.56 geared 14FF without swapping carriers). Also get an open diff version so you can slip in a Detroit.

not to be a d!ck but why new thread. all the info and traffic in your orignal thread and now new ? :dunno:

1500 for the 1ton 60 front good with that list.

and find a 14ff for the rear. fast/easy to build for newbys/cheeper parts.

Not a D.ck move I thought about it, but I often find a thread like that dies off really fast. I also thought I had some different questions that hte original and did not want to miss out on info because someone with the answer to my newer specific questions might not reclick on teh old post. Other forums I am on a thread typically has about a 4 reply life, unless you manage to po everyone off. So I figured a new set of specific questions in a new thread would get me better answers. I am not sure why but the first thread ended up with way more replies than anticipated. Maybe CK is just that much cooler...

I would say that a pretty good deal and you should get it. I bought my rebuilt front 60 with 5.13s detroit new brakes and a crossover arm for 1100. And I thought that was a great deal. For the rear 14bff all the way. And as stated earlier, try and get one with an open diff so you can drop a detroit in there

You do not want this axle. If it is stock 4.56, the 5.38s are a thick gear and fit on the 4.10 and down carrier, unless it has a detroit in it, then its very much worth it because a new carrier I think is around a 100 bucks

I was thinking it would not be really hard to find someone to swap carrier with. I am sure that many people go 4.56 and would want to trade the 4.10 carrier? When I change the carrier do I need to change anything else? It is just a size thing on the ring and pinon and nothing to do with axles? Is that correct?

carrier only.

and dont plan on the swap deal. 75-80% of the people if not more buy thick cut gears for 4.10 down carriers to get the 4.56-4.88-5.13-5.38 ratio with out buying a carrier to swap in.

A while ago I had a 4.56 carrier for a 14b. Scrapped it, couldn't find anyone to buy it from me
