Should I Keep A 1982 Silverado 4 Door Dually Longbed With 454 Carb Amd Turbo400 For A While Or Part

Im lookin to get a 1982 Silverado Dually 4 Door With A 454 and Turbo 400 Transmission. It runs and the guy wants 1500 for it. Thr body is in gppd shape although it needs paint. I new it will burn fuel and i want a diesel as a secondhand vehicle instead however i want to give it a chance while i build on my current 1990 v1500 suburban 4x4 350 tbi since i need important stuff done to it while i use the silverado as a work truck or main vehicle. So i was thinking either keep as is and give it a decent paint job along with painting the wheels and drive it for a while amd sell it for a better second hand truck. Or part it and take the dually rear end off with the dually fenders and put it on the suburban as a dually suburban project since ive being thinking of having a dually suburban and sell the rest of the silverado off or just go ajead and keep the silverado.

By the way fuel prices here in new orleans is about 1.99 to 1.77 a gallon.
 
Normal dually fenders will go over a burbs back doors. I think like 5" or so.

Crew cabs in good shape and shortboxes I think are worth the most right now. So I say fix it up as. Then sell it later. I bet you don't lose money

You know what youre right and besides the gas i might just go ajead and keep the silverado as is and even though its not good on gas i can maybe deal with it. Maybe take out the th400 amd put in a 700r4 later amd later on take out the 454 and put in a 350 tbi
 
Mmmmmmmmm a dually burb.
Gotta be a 2wd for me 17" rims with like a 31" tall skinny tire and lowered. Plenty of sidewall and only lowered like 2"

Best of both worlds.

An suv with a power of a dually that can hold cargo and more people and go offroad which is the case of my 4x4 half ton. Plus looks good

Keep it! When I was a kid on the farm, my Dad had a 2WD 1ton 4 spd 454 crew cab dually. Only complaint I had with it was the wide turning radius, oh and the terrible mileage. My Dad had a propane adapter put on to help with the fuel bills. That truck was a beast. I don't remember choking it with anything we tried to pull.

Really, gas is that cheap?!

Can take out the turbo400 transmission and slap in a 700r4? And convert it to tbi to help it fuel mileage?

Speaking of fuel mileage i wonder why they did not give these trucks a 4 speed and instead of a 3 speed automatic

They did, if you count the SM465. The TH700R4 wasn't used because it wasn't and still isn't rated for handling big block torque. It's easy enough to break one with a 350 (as you just found out, right?).

As for why they didn't have a decent O/D tranny in either manual or automatic, I've wondered that myself. Ford was kicking their tail in that department during the 80s.

Yes and yes. But do know that in stock form a 700R4 is not a good choice behind a big block. You can have a tranny built for such an application, but many guys have blown a 700R4 without trying too hard.

As for fuel injection, TBI and TPI should both be bolt-on systems if you find a donor truck. But getting the parts to function electrically is more work than simply bolting the pieces together. :haha:

It might be my first time having a carburated vehicle. I know they have difficulty starting and all than fuel injection and adjusting to altitudes. I heard however i can get a edlebrock carburator which i dont have to adjust and better than a stock carburator

You won't hafta adjust it...for a while. :haha:

It's been said many times, fuel injection will do everything it can to keep the engine running, carburetors just sit there and hope things work out. There is a reason that no new cars have offered carburetors for a long time.

Edlebrock doesn't have a magic formula that makes their carburetors magically work and deliver more power and efficiency and flaming pink monkeys. It's still a pile of mechanical parts without any feedback mechanism.
 
I would say keep it in one piece. I used to live in New Orleans in the 70's. I had a lot of good times and good friends out there. :saweet:

Those were the times when new orleans the fun place to be along with other things . Not just downtown and all. Today its just mostly for tourists

I actually in the French Quarter when I was kid from 1973 to 1975. After that my parents moved out to the suburbs of New Orleans. I saw a lot of great rock concerts in New Orleans. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd (before the plane crash), ZZ-Top, and Aerosmith. I used to go fishing and crabbing when I was bored and there was nothing to do. I was able to buy beer legally back then too at just 16. America was different place back then.
