Should I pick up this jack?

http://yuma.craigslist.org/pts/4711582551.html .... and get a pipe for a handle? (the handle is missing). He'll take offers. Maybe $10? Or am I just asking for more potential inherent danger.

I'd be all over that. I use mine a lot out on the trails.

Mine got dirty, and dried up (not enought lube:whistle:) and started not working correctly. It would only go up, or only go down. Pulled it apart, cleaned it, and lubricated everything. Works like a charm now.

A Hi-lift aka farm jack is a wonderful tool. Shouldn't be the only jack you have, but they're handy for all kinds of stuff. I've used mine for metal bending, moving a shed, and yes, even lifting the truck. You should also have a regular floor and/or bottle jack though.

Anyway, as mentioned, tear it down, wire brush it, repaint it (to prevent further rust/gummification) and lube it.

I usually see good working Hi Lift jacks for $50, I just bought mine for $40.

Where is the handle?

Says in the add, it doesn't go up anymore, that and no handle, I wouldn't, I'm picky that way though. Not much more for a new, compete working one.

I think I've seen rebuild kits for these that have the two pins and springs in them. But "broken" is too vague - it might have an important piece snapped in half and it might just need lube. It should be simple to spot.

I would get it if there isn't any obvious cracks in an important piece. They do sell rebuild kits which are pretty cheap, maybe $10. I got 1 for a friend at a swap meet. It started acting up on us where you'd have to hit it with a hammer for the pins to properly engage lol. After the rebuild, it worked like new.
