Hey guys, I reasently bought a sm 465 that was rebuilt and I took the top cover off because I noticed the inside of the transmission was red and it turns out the person painted the inside of the transmission red, is this gonna be a problem? Is the paint gonna chip off overtime and hurt the transmission? As I was trying to put the top cover back on some of the paint was getting scratched off. Also I noticed that my shift forts had a plastic coating on them and that it was chipping off, Is there a fix that a transmission shop can do or is that Teflon coating not necessary? I’m just concerned that the Teflon chunks will act like a metal shaving on a rotating surface and wear a groove into it. Thanks guys

Yes, that coating is a wear plate. Without that, it will machine the forks or shift collar. I’d be more worried about that the the paint

Ok the paint isn’t on there thick the guy I bought it from said his transmission guy likes painting inside of differentials and transmissions because it keeps oil deposits from sticking to the inside.

I wouldn't worry about the paint. Weird, but oh well.

The shift forks it's been hypothesized that when that coating wears, engagement of the shift collars in certain gears (particularly 2nd IIRC) leads to the transmission popping out of gear under certain conditions. Mine will do it sometimes if the road is really bumpy (potholed forest road) and I'm on/off the throttle. They make "fixes' for this in the way of a spacer that replaces a couple of snap rings, but have never seen someone actually test what works one way or the other. Probably because doing the spacer is a real PITA, and I'm not sure that new shift forks are made

It would be nice if someone would start rebuilding the forks with replaceable pads like some of the more modern transmissions and t-cases use.
