well i have the gov bomb in the back of my 14 bolt .. im running 44" boggers ... now the question is should i get an open carrier and buy a detroit locker so i can make better turns?? or should i just weld that sum o bitch up? also anyone have a guide or pics on how they welded up a gov bomb?

Open carrier and Detroit.
I had a gov lock too and I think I paid about 50 Canadian for the open carrier and sold the Gov bomb for about the same.

yep i got a open carrier for 4.65 and lower for 60 on e bay. sure beats 3 hundred somthing they are asking new.

is the detroit that much of an advantage for trails? im trying to weigh the cost of carrier and locker ,maybe ill just weld it up till i can afford to finish the rear axle

Welding is the best thing you can do to a gov-bomb.
Then you can run it until you save up the money for an open with a detroit. :D

I say weld it. I welded mine on my dd. I love it and if it dont turn sharp enough just tap the throttle and itll come around.

If your main concern is just trail performance, save the money and just weld it. In a rear diff on a trail, I doubt you would really be able to tell the difference in regards to turning. Several guys in our club, including myself, have been running welded rear diffs for years now and have never had any issues on the trail.

so the farthest ive gotten on a tear down on my carrier was removing the gears when i swapped them .. lol so how do you guys go about splitting teh carrier?

there is a tech article about installing a detroit. Follow that but instead of pulling the spiders out tack weld them while they sit in the one half of carrier then flip them into the other half of carrier and tack that side (That way the fit back in after you finish welding) then pull them out and weld the holy living piss out of them, then weld some more and repeat instructions in reverse order to re-install.

so i read up on the detroit install and it looks like on my gov bomb after i remove the bolts holding the ring gear on then it just pulls apart by itself?

No, mine stays locked most of the time, think about how many times you're trying to make tight turns on the trail when you're NOT on the gas (even a little bit). It doesn't happen very often.

you can not put a detroit in a housing that was a gov-lock. you have tio have an open carrier.

related question...

are there any issues with all that welding/heat of the axles not fitting back into the side gears? i was thinkin about a spool, but i may just get my gov lock welded.

as long as you use the carrier to start welding everything together, there should not be any problem about fitting anything back together. be sure to clean out the slag from the side gears before installing the carrier to the housing.

^ What he said :)

Just don't weld the front :doah:

I did it backwards. I have aboot $350 in my open carrier and detroit in my 14FF. I however do run a welded front as I could not afford a Detroit for my 60 at this time. It def drives different but I did not have any problems with it last weekend. I do have a hydro setup to put on I just need to make one hole and do some welding:o . Like was said if you do not drive it on the road alot I would weld it up cause my detroit is almost never unlocked even on corners:D
