i have put about 5 pumps on my 86 k5 in the last year this last pump only lasted about 5k miles and is leaking again.

i have 1 tons, 37's and redneck ram steering box. truck usually see's only highway but the last time i went wheeling is when it started loosing fluid.

any special pumps and lines out there yall run to keep from having problems? this is getting old.

need more info on how it failed and was installed ?

and do you run a cooler ? with all that stuff goin on i would run one.

If your getting them at autozone I replaced two in a row on my Camaro before I got one that leaked less and didn't feel like changing it again. They all leaked from the front shaft. It sits all winter which doesnt help. I pulled it out of thegarage last weekend for the first time and it is whining again. Surprise!

most of them just lock up or start leaking. this one is leaking fluid like crazy. pump and lines have less than 3k on them. have not determind the leak just yet but i was on the trail when i noticed it and didnt even make it 20 miles home before all the fluid was gone.

never thought about running a PS cooler, yall piece the kit together or is there a good setup out there.

Sounds like your cooking the guts out of the pump, you can use any old transmission cooler on the RETURN side off the pump

yep remove rubber hose from return line on p/s box and run to a cooler up front. then run hose back to line you pulled it from.

also have you extended the full port on the p/s pump. i know hydro assist guys need more capacity in the system as it will drop levels down and possible suck air and fry the pump.

min you need a big cooler and fresh system. and flush the crap all out and fill from scratch and try again.

heat is the death of a hydro system just like a auto tranny thats basicly a hydro pump .

i will be running a p/s cooler and filter on my rig. plus a t-stat valve and big cooler on tranny and temp gauge with 2 sendors for temp. and even a oil temp for engine with oil cooler. got to keep them cool when rpm's are used and in low air flow speed areas.

junk yard hunt for me most the time.

los of fords come with p/s or small atf coolers. and bonus for them was i seen lots of them as plate style not the tube/fin style.

then just a few lengths of hose/clamps/zip ties and fill the system and blead air out.

I simply used a transmission cooler kit.

Stopped alot of the problems I was having, I knew I was overheating the pump though because I would lose all power steering occasionally

Humm.. seems like a good idea. I have a milemarker hydro winch too, so I guess some extra cooling wont hurt.

You want to hear something funny? I switched to a HD AC delco factory power steering pump- apparently this is supposed to put out more fluid- odd thing is, after I put it on, I get that binding in the morning, where my old one didnt. Lol.

The hydro winch does work fine though, but I do feel the fluid heating up- in fact I feel it in the hoses. Never considered what it was (temp wise) when I wasn't using the winch. Time to add an old cooler. Im out of space in front of the AC though.. lol. (between the oil cooler, and the twin trans coolers... )
