Does mineral spirits have any effect on gaskets? Silicon and paper gaskets? I sure hope not...Im preping the engine for a paint job and decided to clean grease and grime with it, works well but, I noticed it made some of the overhanging silicon gaskets just peel right off, I hope I didnt just cause myself a gasket overhaul.

Overhanging silicone will peel right off anyway.

I am guessing it is fine as long as you didn't leave it soak into the gaskets for a long time.

some mineral spirits have silicone in it. Does it leave have a non-slippery feel to it when washing the parts? If it feels slippery, it probably has silicone in it, and would need a wash with brake cleaner, or laquer thinner.

It doesnt feel slippery, I primed the motor after cleaning it with mineral spirits. Primer seems to be sticking good. Like said before, I wouldnt soak the motor with it, but Id spray a lil on there and wipe off, then I noticed some of the silicon gaskets kinda peeling off, its probably nothing, im just very worrisome.

denatured alcohol is all you need to know for ANY painting prep........ leave the mineral spirits for tar removal and varnish work..... it's way too much of a petroleum base to be consistent..

The rustoleum engine primer I am using said to clean with mineral spirits. I just have got the engine primed, should I go back and re-prep it with denatured alcohol and start over?

no... it is what it is.. if it layed on fine with no fisheye, leave it.... i'm just telling you for future prep.....

Ill throw some orange on it this weekend and see how it looks, I plan on 4 or 5 coats, that paint aint cheap!!! Bu thanks for your input!
