Cruise works but the accelerate resume function does not work. Hasn't since I got it. This is in my 89 burb

Recently it started turning off when you hit a large bump and it takes several times pushing the button to set it.

My guess is I need a new turn signal stalk.

Think I'm on the right track?

I would check the electric connections where it exits the column and the control module the mounts to the brake assembly on driver side above accelerator peddle.

How do you test the control module?

This is not based on personal experience, but I would think that the resume not working could be in the switch, (on the lever) and dropping out from a large bump could be there, or the brake pedal switch. It could be worn enough to drop out quickly and not connect again for a bit, like after some vibrations get it back to making contact.

My '07 company truck will drop the cruise out if I don't hold up on the brake pedal over certain bumps on the interstate.

Yeah, sounds like a double issue to me. I'd guess you might be able to adjust the brake switch a little tighter, or if it has an adjustable brake pushrod, just snug it up. But my guess on the resume/accelerate part is just the stalk/mf switch. I had to put one in my 93. Wasn't bad to do. Just pull the wheel and fish the wires out the column. Definitely check the plug at the bottom before committing though.

I did this on my 84. You don't have to pull anything as long as you can fish the wire down the column. Pop it out, pop it in.

The swearing happens when fishing the wire. But I have a plan this time

It's easy to pull the wheel... Then there's room. Learned this working on furds. Easier to move stuff than fight small spaces!

Sounds like you may have a couple of issues, but as others have said, check that the brake switch isn't near the end of its adjustment...if it is, a bump will tend to kick it out of cruise, and may not allow resume to work either. I thought I had another issue, but if cruise shut off while driving, I found that if I pulled up on the brake pedal with my foot, it would allow me to engage cruise again. Couldn't even feel the pedal move, but that was it.

If cruise sets, but resume has never worked, the issue isn't solely with the brake switch, since the brake switch out of adjustment won't allow cruise or resume to work.

Resume has never worked I assumed that was in the stalk.

I'll mess around with it a bit.

On long trips the cruise seems to be worth about a half mile per gallon

I've never measured what I could do vs. what the cruise can do MPG-wise. I don't drive enough of the same patch of ground to test both ways. I've noticed that at times (which are frustrating) mine likes to play a game where it's heavy on the throttle, then off. Continuously. Instead of being linear, it reacts too quickly both on and off the throttle. I never did install a vacuum canister(ball) in the setup as GM did, I do plan to add one in at some point, to see if the vacuum fluctuation is the cause. Eliminating that surging should improve mileage a bit.

The ball does for cruise, what it does for the climate control system. Steady vacuum is the key to both systems.

I have had this issue several times and it’s usually the cable coming out of the turn signal has rubbed a bare spot or in half in the column
Usually fixed by replacing the turn signal lever with cruise cable
