after checking the axle I.D chart i'm uncertain of the differences visually between a 44 and 60. search feature has not been working well for me..

going to check out a truck with a supposed 60 in the front. want to make sure its not just a 44 with 8 lug conversion... is it just a larger hump in the cover for the larger ring gear? anything else i should be looking for? thanks...

Looks for Kingpins instead of balljoints.

Look for 60F in the lower right of the diff housing (on the cover side of the diff)

Look at the passenger side of the diff. there should be 1 ubolt and 2 bolts holding the springplate to the axle.

2 ubolts= bad
44= bad
balljoints= bad

thank ya kindly sir, preciate that.. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Also the steering arm on the left side will have 4 bolts holding it on instead of 3 bolts as the dana 44's use.

Not always...my '69 dana 44 with closed knuckles and drums has 4 bolts holding it on. I know they aren't that common, but remember...stay away from anything with front drums except Napco axles, and sell them to collectors...lol. Here is a crappy shot:

The tale tale sign would be look for the absence of a ubolt on the inner right front spring plate. Dana 60's bolt on in this location and have a u-bolt on the outer spring plate holes.

Heres a good pic of my 60, you can see what everyone is talking about.
