I did a search and didn't find anything so I will try a post. I am wondering if anybody has a skid plate or made one for the gas tank on the 1st gen. I have a poly tank and don't want to have a rock go through it. Any ideas? Any pics? Thanks

There was a guy who made some reproductions a while back, but I think he sold through them quickly. They wouldn't be very difficult to make. The factory skid plates are made out of sheet stock with a few bends a few welds.

Mine has one that I'm sure is not factory. 1/8 steelw/angle iron ribs. Has about 1 inch clear ance to the bottom of the tank. It has taken some pretty hard shots, and not bent. Will try to get some pics in the next few days.

I did have a factory skid but I gave it away.
I made a skid with some square tubing, 1x2 I think, I made a letter H then welded up a peice of sheet steal to it. Then I made 4 legs that bolt to the frame. Here is a side view of it:

For your poly tank I would try and find someone with a factory skid. It will fit perfect!
Good Luck

Ah, good to have pics. The factory one looks easy enough to fab up and have it look pretty close. I don't have much confidence I'd find anything that old in a wrecking yard around here.

Pacific Fab is in Morgan Hill..they could easily make you one :D

Thanks for the pics guys. I am willing to try and make one I just needed a push start. Now that I have a good idea I think I can fab something up. Thanks

The 90 blazer I recently parted out had one.
Seems like they'd be around still.

Looked to be easy enough to modify to work with our years, just in case you didn't find an original one.

It's my plan to cut this one down to fit around the new fuel cell.

My factory skid plate is sitting in my garage. I might be able to take some more photos for ya if you need it.

In December I pulled the gas tank skid plate from the back of the barn where it has been sitting when I pulled the tank to have it cleaned and sealed. I cleaned it up for paint about 2 years ago and, well, just never got it painted.

Used the 3M undercoating/rubberized stuff and the finished product looks great. To bad I moved it before it was dry, ended up putting the smudge you see in the side shot. May sand it a bit and touch it up, maybe not.

whoops, forgot to add the :haha: icon after that sentence. Though I do think I will touch up my inner fender black paint I sprayed on recently - dang cat just had to walk on the fender before it was dry
