Quick question for ya on your spare tire mount, looks as is if swings out toward the drivers side, and obviously the tire is biased toward the drivers side, how do you like that setup? I have been thinking I may eventually setup mine that way (since my plate is already mounted on the passenger side of my tailgate anyway) but (other than yours), it seems like everybody either centers their spare or biases its placement to the passenger side with the swingout to the passenger side too. I was just wondering how you've liked it so far and if the visibility out the back seems good with your setup. Thanks for your time bro! BTW, your rear bumper/tire carrier/jerrycan holder setup looks great!!! :thumb:

In case you didn't know I built that bumper.

Yes the tire carrier does swing to the drivers side. Having a 35" tire mounted on the passenger side killing any view through the rear view mirror or looking over my shoulder wasn't something I wanted. I also did not want to mount the tire in the center for two reasons, first it would put alot more leverage on the hinge and secondly it would still kill my view. The best option was to make the tire mount on the drivers side and then swing to the drivers side to keep the least amount of leverage working to my advantage. I can look in the rear view mirror or over my shoulder and I have a clean as day view as if I had no tire mounted back there. :thumb:

EDIT: Found it! I like the attention to detail with the Bowtie on the carrier mounting flange too, sweet! Hmm, just saw that I posted in your thread too, dang I am forgetful, LOL! Anyways, sweet build bro!

Thanks. I can't take ALL the credit for the rear bumper though, Greg helped with a portion of it by helping me cut the bottom angles with his plasma cutter before he moved to NH and my CNC buddy gets credit for cutting out the bumper bracket slots and license plate area on the CNC at his work.

Got to give credit where credit is due. :thumb:
 
They look good... but do they work :thinking: How bout a quick run on the mini rubicon followed by the pipes in the obstacle course and to finish it off a quick run through tank trap :D

A little bit of UHMWPE under that step would really bring out the lettering.... and some LED lighting under that to illuminate it would be :pimp:

Moved to the Garage...

Scott, I built a rear bumper with a fullsize swing out tire carrier many years ago. The rear visibility thing was a concern, but in the end I kept the tire on the passenger side and had it swing open towards the passenger side for one reason. My biggest concern was a street driving scenario where if I had a flat and had to pull onto the shoulder to fix it. With the way you have yours opening you're pulling it open into traffic which is dangerous enough, but you're also putting yourself physically on that side of the truck. I preferred to have it so the carrier swung towards the ditch/sidewalk etc.

In the end the visibility issue wasn't a big enough deal for me. K5's generally have largish side view mirrors, and the newer ones have the slightly convex passenger mirror.

I like the sliders!

Thanks for moving this Rene.

I have a stop built into the carrier so it cannot open any further than 90* from the closed position just for that reason.
