Hey guys... new guy here... I Just bought a nice 1989 Chevy Blazer 4x4,9" lift,36x14.50x15 superswampers, and 700r4 tranny... My prob is this... when I got my truck it was working great, then a few days later, our neighbor noticed a giant dripping puddle under my truck... turned out to be the transmission pan gasket... (Guy that had it before me put RTV silocone on the rubber tranny gasket)... so, I changed the gasket, and filter... now it leaks worse than ever... any advice??? I just tightened the bolts with one hand... did not torque them down or anything (I didnt want to push the gasket out with all the pressure)... but I have used about 2 gallons of tranny fluid trying to figure this delima out... I was thinking maybe a bent pan??? Im not sure... anyone else had this problem???

Please help!!!
Thanks!!!
Steven...

when you had the pan off, did you clean both surfaces really well? the pan surface could be bent also. would be a good time to upgrade to a thicker aluminum pan with more capacity.

ya, my brother had that same problem, he dropped the pan about 4 times, it might be slightly warped. if u have the money, id do what he said or just find another cheap pan that u can try.

You need to start running really thick tranny fluid to slow down the leak! LOL JUST KIDDING! When you say you didn't torque down the bolts, how tight did you get them? Where is it leaking? If it is leaking really bad from the corner then the PO may have over tightened the pan bolts and F'ed up the pan. I would buy a new pan and a torque wrench and tighten to spec (make sure both surfaces are clean). AND MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GET ANY OF THAT RTV IN THE TRANNY!!!

Just go buy a good tanny pan gasket and don't use any RTV on it. It shouldn't leak.

There are plenty of bolts in a 700 pan. If the pan is warped a little, you could seal the gasket to the pan with a little RTV. If the case is messed up, you'll have to get a little more creative. When you are done, the bolts will have to be more than finger tight. Go around a few times with the torque wrench, bringing each one closer to the torque spec a little bit at a time.

Oh yeah, don't bother with RTV if there is even a trace of oil on the surface. Brake cleaner is your friend.

I personally have always had good luck with leak free pans by cleaning extremely well, then put a very thin coat of black RTV on the pan only, not enough to where it's going to gush out, just enought to fill any voids and let the gasket stick to it.

Then again, clean the trans mating surface very well with brake clean and a rag, let it totally dry, and apply the pan with the gasket on it, no RTV on the trans side...

after the trans heats everything up the gasket should seal itself to the trans side without leakes.

cleanliness is the key though. well, along with not overtightening the bolts. :D
