Slowly but surely, the 1988 V20 Sub

Nothing real major just stockpiling parts slowly. Figured I'd toss this up here to keep a timeline of when things happened.

Got these from a guy at work, long way from putting these on but they serve to keep me excited.

Scored these off a guy on a squarebody cummins group this morning. Dont need the tappet cover but it was a package deal so why not. Wanted to use 94+ mounts but didnt feel like spending $100 a piece for them online. So instead I got them with the input shaft and bearing retainer needed for my V8 gas trans for $100 instead.

Also going to meet a guy and get an intercooler, intake elbow, radiator, and the intercooler plumbing from a 93 D250 this weekend. Planned on using later model stuff but this popped up cheap so I'll make use of what I can. I'll post pictures when i get it picked up.

Damn I saw those mounts. That was a good deal all together. Nice buy

So what's the latest on this one? Any movement? Or just hanging out looking all good and stuff?

Actually a little bit! I got it out of the shed and stuck the mirrors back on. I need to get together with a friend of mind and get an engine pulled out of a truck hes got. Then the burb will get a "new" 350 to keep it mobile for now since the Cummins parts collecting is slow

I do need to get the windows working since working windows in summer heat is a requirement. Probably have to wire them to relays

I'd assume so? these ones had the correct threaded inserts in the doors (some of them anyways). Both my 78's have Ford mirrors on them somehow

Never saw a sub with the west coast mirrors on it before.

Finally getting in the mood to work on this now that we’re getting close to having harvest done. Late august my friend Tucker and I got curious and pulled the pan. Everything looked alright in the bottom except I could hear the timing chain slapping when moving the crank by hand. Yanked the timing cover and found the chain so worn out that it was less than 1/16” from falling off the crank gear (sadly no photos taken). We ran to town for parts and slammed a new timing chain and balancer onto the 350 to find the knock is now worse :dunno:, I must’ve missed something in the bottom end. So I’m gearing up to start pulling the engine this week since the weather will be decent.

This is the most action it’s seen awhile. Tucker and I were Using the torpedo heater to thaw the pump on the diesel barrel enough to fuel the equipment so we could keep going when it was 0 degrees on Tuesday. (Plus the 78 farm truck making an appearance)

With much sadness for the 78 farm truck, the deed is done and the burb has a good engine.

took the dogs for one last ride before it fulfills it’s organ donor duty.

3D5E7AD0-CAAC-4474-B654-2DF57ACC7292.jpegWorked on the tractor all day yesterday then started gutting the 78. Got about an hour into it and was losing the daylight so decided to call it here.

Got started around 10 this morning and other than a trip to town for a few gaskets we worked from 10-6 solid. This picture was the only one I took due to being covered in grease and oil most of the day. The 350 runs better in the burb than it ever did in the 78.

Sadly the heater core didn’t survive installing the new hoses. So I had to pinch off the lines and I’ll pick up a new core when I pick up the new engine oil cooler lines. Going to tidy up a bunch of previous owner wiring, install the heater core, and clean up the interior and see where that leads me. Probably going to steal the 2” blocks from the rear of the 78 to help make up for the sagged out springs. Today was a dang good day for December 22

Stole the K20’s tires for temporary then Got the exhaust a bit more permanent today. The 3” and glass pack is louder than intended but works for now and was cheap. Then took sally (the dog) for a ride.

Heater core replacement is done. I’ll be a happy man if I never have to do that again. Getting the heater box split and back together with the China ads core was a huge pain.

not hard to tell why the old one leaked

broke this dang thing. Luckily I’ve got a parts burb that saved the day. Someone had been into this thing before me

pulled the front section of carpet out and cleaned it up with the garden hose and degreaser. Looks much better now.

yanked the rear seat and vacuumed it from front to back. Much nicer having the thing cleaned out. Look at all that room for activities.

Alright fellas I’ve got a question, when I took the pan off my TH400 the filter bolt was just a normal bolt with no shoulder of any kind or spacer to hold the filter snug. Having been Atleast 10 years since I had the pan off of an old auto I thought it was supposed to be tight so I built a spacer. Fast forward to now and if the fluid is cold the pump whines a little which I’m assuming is cavitation. Do I need to pull the pan and remove the spacer? May seem like a dumb question but all I ever have ran is manual transmissions normally.

Took the pan off last night and removed the spacer from the filter bolt. Put the pan back on with a Moroso rubber/steel gasket then resealed the vac modulator also. Saw the modulator was made by Holley.

How cold you talking? The th400 I used to have in Ratbag and the th350 in De77 both were noisy when it was cold.
-15c or lower would make them howl for a bit.

What is that about 5f I think.
