O.K....I just spent all day putting in my 465 in my 70 blazer that has a 406. It was a PIA to get everything lined up and the splines on the shaft lined up. I installed the tranny without the top cover as I am having the shifter forks replaced and when I tightend the transmission down to the bellhousing I could not get the engine to turn over (manually) with the transmission in neutral. When I loosen the bolts from the tranny to the bellhousing I can manually turn the engine over and see the gears in the transmission turn. I know the splines are lined up but how easy should the engine turn. The engine is brand new, never been started.

first thing I would check is to see if the transmission is actually in neutral. sometimes that reverse gear likes to fall into gear and if any of the other forward gears are engaged it will bring everything to a stop. This could happen very easily with the top cover removed.

Thanks, I just checked it and it is all the way back and not engaged. It will move when I turn the engine, I just don't know how easily it should turn.
