Putting new gaskets and seals on the 465 while the motor is out. Had a little fun getting the top cover on and off, but that's all good now... My question is; What is the plastic coating that is on the shift fork's pad that rides in the shift collar? It's obviously some kind of bushing material... How important is it, and what might happen without it?
The coating is flaking off of my forks... Don't know if it's just from age, or from my monkeying around with the top cover, but not sure if I like metal to metal contact if it's not supposed to be...
Anything I can use to recoat them? Don't want to buy new shift forks or disassemble the top cover if I don't have to... Run it the way it is?

I've seen guys try to recoat them with everything ranging from teflon tape to that resin you can dip hand tools in. None of them had much success. I think the only real sollution is new forks.

Near as I can tell it is some type of resin. Probably a polyethylene resin of some sort. It sucks having to replace the perfectly good forks just because some coating is wearing off the ends :doah:

Someone has to be coating these things if there are replacement forks right? Or are all the forks out there N.O.S. ??

I just replaced all my forks and it was pretty straightforward....just followed the directions here....http://www.zieglerdigital.ca/public/downloads/sm465rbman.pdf

The 1-2 and 3-4 fork are the only ones with the coating as I ordered a new reverse fork and it didn't come with the coating.

Yeah, don't like the idea of changing them... what might I expect to pay for a set of forks... or per fork or whatever?

And thanks for the link. I don't have a good breakdown of a 465. It's loading real slow right now, but I saved it so I can check it out later.
