I am interested in doing a auto to manual swap, I have read the previous posts but I am wondering how well this tranny wrks for adailyb driver on hwy speeds. is 4th gear low enough to run at 70-80 mph with out reving the motor to the sky.

thanks in advance

depends on your axle gearing and tire size. ive got 3.73's and 33's and at 75mph im turning 27 or 2800 rpm.

yea it isn't a big deal... your RPM's will probably be a bit higher, but people ran like this for YEARS

at 70 i am at about 3000rpm with 4.56s and 36s with a diesel... thats screamin! but for you gassers its not that bad

At 60, with 33's and 3.42's, I'm turning 2200 or so, which is perfect for the motor that is in it. Excellent mileage, plenty of power.

What trans do you have now? I have always heard that the TH400 and the SM465 have the same gearing 1-2-3 vs. 2-3-4. So unless you have a 700R4, it should be very much the same... except now you'll have to row the gears! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I am doing a swap from a TH400 to the SM465/205 hydro setup. Trust me, I'll be posting ASAP the results of that mod... I can't wait to drive her again!

With the same gearing the SM 465 will cause it to run with slightly lower RPM...similar to a lock-up equipped automatic in 'drive'

Dan, you could see a 200 rpm drop in cruise rpm...

Yeah, both web sites are wrong./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

If you keep searching you'll find reference to both ratio's. MJ recently took the time to calculate the true ratio in a semi-disassembled SM465 and confirmed the third gear ratio was 1.70:1. I trust MJ a lot more than a web site posting hearsay.

As for the cruise rpm, a manual will always turn less rpm at the same speed in 1:1 than an auto unless the auto is a lock-up convertor style like the 700R4.

Well, I guess I will have to look up that thread, huh? Thanks for the good info Rene!

And just to clarify, I completely agree with the statement you made about the RPMs dropping somwhat due to the "locked" pressure plate/flywheel vs. the slightly-slipping non-locking auto converter! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I know what you mean...

That, and I can't wait for the power gains... after all the 400 is the LEAST efficient auto trans out there... I don't care how tough it was! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif But enough about me, I have hijacked this thread enough already!!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Sorry!

You'll love the granny gear...then again winning races is prety tough to do with the SM465./forums/images/icons/wink.gif It's too hard to powershift it./forums/images/icons/smile.gif
