SM465/205 10 spline combo

I just bought a '76 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 for $400 mainly for the SM465/205 setup. I want to swap them into my '86 Chevy M1008. From what I've read, this tranny/case combo has 10 spline output shafts.

Is the newer 32 spline version of this tranny and transfer case so much stronger that I should keep looking for the 32 spline setup or should I not worry about it and swap in what I got?

FYI, I wheel the truck...It's on 40" tires, H1 Beadlocks recentered. 52's springs up front...63's in the back. Wheel Base shortened about 20". Locked front and rear. (Shortened bed soon to come :D) Anyways...

I just don't want to waste time and money if I'm gonna break an output shaft right off the bat.

Also, If I run the SM465/205 that I just bought, I believe I will need a rear 1350 yoke for the 205. Can someone tell me where to pick one up?

Thanks for the help! I do appreciate it.

Wheel it as it is. Lots of people are running that combo without much problem. The biggest issue it the coupler between the trans and t-case. I DD/wheel my 465/205 and haven't had any problems. If you're really concerned about it...install what you have, wheel till it breaks, then replace it with 32 spline stuff.

I have no idea where to get an output yoke, but I'm sure someone else does.

One other problem is the adapter on those setups...the "feet" (where it bolts to the crossmember) always break. The 32 spline stuff shortened the adapter, not sure how that fixed the problem, but doesn't seem to be an issue, even though the adapter is longer.

The coupler can be a problem, want to inspect it and the trans/t-case splines before installing it.

The transmission output will be 10 spline, the transfer case input will be 10 spline.

The front output on the t-case will be 10 spline, the rear output on the t-case will be 32 spline.

None of those are really cause for concern, the real weak point of a 10 spline 465/205 setup is the adapter. They have had a heavy 205 hanging off the back of them for 30+ years and that's tough on them.

I've broken one adapter, many others on this site have too.

I wouldn't say it's easy to break but it happens. I wouldn't shy away from a 10 spline 465/205 because of it.

I run the 10 spline setup in my M1008 and I use all the power  of my 6.2
No troubles yet :wink1:
Got the 1350 rear yoke from a 205 that been behind a 400 with 32 spline input.

Be on the hunt for as late model an adapter as you can find - after breaking 3 of them I have found that the later ones have more gusseting and thicker castings. Other than that - wheel it till it breaks THEN upgrade :D

I have an adaptor off an 86, what's a fair price to ask for it?? Be worth it to sell the tranny too? I need the t-case for my junk, but might have a 8 track case available....

The transmission output will be 10 spline, the transfer case input will be 10 spline.

The front output on the t-case will be 10 spline, the rear output on the t-case will be 32 spline.

Thanks for that info...I was wondering why I couldn't find a 10 spline 1350 rear output yoke anywhere on the internet. :doah:

As far as the adapter goes, howabout welding on a few gussets for strength?

Has anyone tried this?

Most common place they break is where the bolt goes through, no way I can see to reinforce that.

the breaks that we see, are from worn out engine and transfercase mounts. keep those in good shape, or buy poly ones and you'll eliminate most problems.

I am having some issues with my set up and was wondering if I can make a "hybrid" t case. I have a 465/205 from a 72 with a 10 spline front output (and I think 10 spline input too. I should have it apart tonight) and want to put a 32 spline flange front output on it. I have another trans/t case on the ground that I can use for parts. The trans is shot but I can use the T case. It has the 32 spline output and flange I need. So my real question is, Can I swap input or output shafts between the cases so I can keep my 10 spline input and use the 32 spline output I need? Is it easier or better to change the output of the trans and run the newer t case?
