From what I've read about these tranny's, they are basically just a 4 speed. I have a 4 speed as well, but I have a granny gear as my "Low", then 1, 2, and 3 for my final drive gear... what tranny do I have?

SM465 or SM420. yes some people call them a 3 speed with granny gear, I call it a 4 speed cause well I use my granny gear A LOT.

Being the not-original tranny from this truck (original was a 3 on the tree manual of some sort) and the fact that it was a 327 pushing it rather than a 305, which do I likely have, 465 or 420? Which one is better? Which T-case do I likely have in an 86 blazer?

The 420 is older, with a slightly lower granny gear, and I think it is less beefy. I have pics of a 465 in my webshots if you wanna take a look.

If its the Tcase from the factory it should be an NP 208. Thats what I have at least. Im not sure about your tranny though. The other more educated folks here can help you out in that respect.

your K5 is an '86? did they even still have the 3-on-the-tree then?
and the 327 doesnt matter, it wasnt original and both the 420 and 465 came behind it from the factory anyway.
gotta get under it and look. 2 of the 6-bolt PTO plates and you have a 465 (which is most likely). if it has just one, its a 420.

the 86 had a 3-speed AUTO on the tree... my column still has the shift lug attached, but not the shift arm...

I don't know if it helps but the 420 hasnt been made in a chevy since 1967 so if you know what the stuff came out of it might help.

What transfer case do you have? If you look on the case of the trans somewhere it should say something like **465 the ** being numbers I can't remember :o

This will all have to wait until the truck gets home... it's still in the shop waiting for the engine, which should be delivered today.

measure the length. A 420 is 10" and a 465 is 12"

the case lngth, not overall length
yes true three on the tree still existd in 86 we have an 86 pickup out behind garage it is 4.3L and sm326 column shift

68-up 465

47-67 420

420 is tough also
jeep guys hunt for the 420 alot, are wanted

they are still aorund, although most have been chopped over to v8 and auto
my 84 is still original three on the column it shifts great but i dont like it liek the real old back int he day three on trees like the 67-72 ones, they were better, and better linkage rods setup than 73-up
