I am running a 465/doubler setup. Ran this trans before with just the 205 and no issues. The issue I am having is when in 1 and second there is a slight gear clatter like something is binding\grinding. Almost sounds like the top gear set has some front to back moment, very slight and it is catching something. I think I have an idea what is causing it. but wanted to get a second opinion before I pulled it.

With the 465 to adapter you have to run the factory gasket, or else the bearing will bind. Well when I put it together I used right stuff rtv on both sides of the gasket. Could this cause enough of an extra gap to possibly cause the top gear set to shift 1/16" or so and cause the gears to make contact were they shouldn't?

I think you're on the right track at least. I don't know how your doubler adapter is made, but it could be binding or even allowing the top shaft to float back and forth a little. Good place to start looking, I'd say.

Posted this also on pirate they are thinking it is the 203. I don't here is my reply.

Don't think it is in the 203. I can put my hand on the 203 while driving down the road and barely feel the clatter. Put it on the trans and you can feel it. Don't think it is the bolts because the sound is not there in granny or third gear, only 1st and 2nd.

I have driven it at least 20-30 miles like this and is it still there. So I don't think it could be a rust issue in the 203.

I may drain the trans, pull the pto covers, and put the rear end on jack stands and have a friend run it trough the gears and see if I can see were it is making contact. Just don't know if I will be able to see anything from the pto ports. If that doesn't work I will pull the top cover and do the same. May also try to pry on the top gear set and see if I have any front to back movement.

I forgot to mention I did replace the front input bearing in the trans but that should not have caused anything. everything else in the trans looked good.
