i have an early model trans...can i put a late model 31/32 (i dont know which one) spline mainshaft in it. like a retrofit? after that. what do i need to get to mate it to a 32spline short female input on the 205? (after i modify my 205).
oh the irony. theres just too many conversions and options its getting frustrating.
I was looking to do the same thing you are talking about, retrofit to 32 spline. In reality, it's a big pita, and better to just find a complete 32 spline oem setup. Sure, you can swap the mainshaft when you rebuild your tranny...but SM465's are dime a dozen, and although the 32 spline version is the rarest, I've still seen quite a few for sale. They are so stout they really dont need rebuilt unless they are totally thrashed.
Then you already know about the 205, you have to bore the input hole so that you can put in the larger 32 spline gear. Probably the easiest part.
The problem is the adapter. You can't use your stocker, because it's too short. EDIT: word on the street was that ORD was making a shorty 32 spline output for use with the stock 465/np203 adapter, which probably would work with the stock adapter- but I don't think they make them any more, and I've never seen or heard of one specifically, just 2nd hand info. You can't use an OEM 32 spline 465/205 adapter because a) they are almost impossible to find by themselves and b) they have the round pattern on the tail end, so you'd have to redrill your stock t-case anyway.
What some people on here suggested was running a 465 to 208 or 241 adapter (which is shorter than the 205 version), with a spacer/adapter to mate it to the old figure 8 pattern. If you have unlimited access to a machine shop, this would be the ticket, because you'd also have to machine a bearing retainer into this as well. However, this adapter does not have a shifter boss like the oem 205 adapters do- so you'd have to improvise.
Basically, the easiest way to go 32 splines is to find a mid 80's K30 and dismantle it, and copy/paste it's drivetrain to your truck. Or if you're lucky and you can just get a piecemeal 32 spline 465/205 combo (they do pop up on ebay occasionally).
For me, I ended up just going with a 2wd tranny and divorced t-case, alot easier and cheaper than going 32 spline.
FYI, my 10 spline junk looked worse than that. The splines in the collar had a razor sharp burr on the ridges, and I sliced myself on them fairly good. My truck also had the rockwell t-case, which is a gigantic turd anyway- so for me it was an excuse to upgrade that as well.
