SM465 nightmare, need advise

Clutch bellcrank

I think I have heard my truck make this noise also. Try barely pressing your clutch pedal down and see if it stops, mine stops when any kind of pressure is put on the pedal. Im pretty positive its the rod that connects to the pedal under the truck I think its called the bellcrank? I never noticed it before I put the transfer case drop kit on my truck and it put the bellcrank in a slight bind with the clutch pedal rod. I bent the piece on the bellcrank where they connect after it came apart one day and its been great ever since but there is a very slight noise like you described. I thought it was just the vibration of the engine causing it to move slightly and rattle a little bit. Maybe the diesel engine makes it worse sense it doesnt run as smoothly. Its not near enough to bother me though its barely noticeable. If you messed with the bellcrank you might be able to figure out what it is. I know its not anythng internal on my truck because its a totally original truck with just over 50,000 grandpa miles on it and its in perfect mechanical shape. Ive seen a lot of old Chevy's have problems with the clutch bellcrank when they are wheeled and flexed hard, I dont particularly like the design. It likes to bind up when the truck is really flexed. Ive even seen them come off where they go on the transmission. Anyway, hope this helps.

I had a Chevelle once that made bad noises like yours, and it was due to the wrong dust cover on the clutch. It wasn't deep enough ( I had changed from BBC to SBC), and it rattled, particularly at idle.......Maybe take it off, and see if the noise goes away -- it can also rattle around the starter. Hope you find it.

noises make me nervous.....

MY K5 did it right after starting, but it got louder after it warmed up--it was silent until the lever on the pressure plate acted up(and I noticed the clutch dragging right away,it was hard to shift, and felt like it wanted to not release all the way, even with proper adjustment)..but if you have a diaphram clutch,it might not be the problem--I havent seen many of that style fail...it could have loose levers rattling, but I'd think it would do it hot or cold...

You might have to put the truck up on a lift and run it until the noise starts in,maybe then you can pinpoint the source of it easier..it might be something simple, like exhaust pipes rubbing on something, tranmitting noise into the cab, which acts like an amplifier..You dont have any bad tranny or motor mounts do you?? if anything in the driveline touches the chassis, like the tranny or transfer case,it will transmit noises into the cab...just a thought..one truck I saw had similar noises to a bad throwout bearing(a scoring noise when clutch was depressed)--it turned out to be bad thrust bearings in the engine--it had a 1/4 inch of cranckshaft end play...

Do you have the little spring that holds the clutch fork tightly against adusting rod, which is used to adjust end play ("end play" should be adjusted at 1 inch)?
