Ok well my sm465 is on its second to last leg :D When the truck is on I hear what sounds like a dry bearing. Its not too loud from the cab but if you get under neither it in neutral its pretty damn loud. It seems like its getting louder too.

I have a few questions about this:

1) Any home remmedies (sp) to shut it up a little until I can afford a rebuild

2) How can I tell 100% whether its the transmission or the tcase. I'm assuming its the trans because its never been replace/built and the noise comes on as soon as you let the clutch out in neutral.

does it make even more noise while you have pressure on the throw out bearing? (the clutch pushed in?)

If not, try Lucus heavy duty oil stabilizer, that stuff is amazing

The truck had a clutch done it not too long ago. The PO was a mechanic and a good one at that. (Built a 9 sec nova himself and when I picked my truck up was mid 350/350 into an s10 for his son) so I really doubt he would put a centerforce clutch in and not do the throwout bearing.

I had a samurai before my chevy and it always had that noise. I was always like my throwut my throw out. Well when I got the clutch done and all new bearings in and the noise was still there I was like ****, I still need a new trans...

Is there anyway I'd be able to diagnos whether its the throwout of the trans?

Hey Stomis,

well I have an sm465 in my DD. When the throwout bearing went bad a year ago, you could tell because when you put pressure on it, it would make noise, but not just in neutral with relatively no pressure on it.

So that, and the fact that the guy who installed your clutch seems pretty knowledgeable, I doubt its the TO bearing.. unfortunately.

Does the trans make any excessive noise at very low rpm?

I mean, if it was me with no money :doah:, I would just make sure you have really good oil in the thing and drive it until it goes. I've had trannies with bad bearings and they drove for thousands of miles.. scary, but they made it!

I'll put another vote towards the throwout bearing, regardless of who installed it.

IMO SM465's and NP205's should be good for (at least) several hundred thousand miles of use before a rebuild. Of course, that all depends on how it was maintained and used.

Throwout bearings (even new ones) are notorious for failure and they are particularly noisy without any pressure on them.

Did you first hear the noise after the new clutch was installed? It really sounds like a TO bearing to me too (not to beat a dead horse)

It's possible the new throw out bearing wasn't packed at manufacture and went in almost dry...

Second on the dry or even premature failure. Also, the installer, pro or not, could have made a mistake by not checking the lube or installing it backwards. It's happened, call em mistakes.

Alright guys I'm gonna try pressing the clutch in a tiny bit and seeing if it makes the noise. The tranny does need a rebuild though it falls out of 3rd gear.

I'm not too morried about it blowing up. Maybe this is what my mecahnicw as talking about when he said my clutch is going to need to have work done to it.

My 465 is doing the exact same thing, in neutral. I get more noise inside than outside though. I do not think it is the TO bearing either.

Nah I'm definatly hearing more noise outside. I'm gonna get under it when I get home and see if its more coming from the bellhousing or from the tranny itself.
