Ok, so my TH400 swap is sidelined for the moment, but my SM465 is making noise, lots of it. Hot/cold doesn't seem to matter. It makes a whirring, grinding noise with the clutch pushed in or during its travel. Like coming up to a stop, or sitting in neutral at a light then trying to go into gear. Throwout bearing right? Well problem is, it comes and goes. Sometimes its fine and quiet, others its not. When this happens, it can be tough to get into gear. I read that sometimes the bolts for the trans can loosen up and the whole thing move off center line with the bellhousing/crank. I also checked my Z bar and it appears to be ok. Thoughts before I yank it out or just park it until I do the swap?

Could be the pilot brg causing the input shaft to spin even with the clutch pushed in? This could even explain the noise, either way check it out before something gets trashed.

That was my other thought, a seizing pilot bearing. Weird that it comes and goes, but guess it would make good sense.

My 465 has started to do this too, but mine is hydro so we need to figure out what is common.

Hydro or mechanical dont matter they both still use a pilot bearing as well as a throwout bearing. The only differance is how that bearing is applied. A dry "bronze" pilot bearing will make god awful noise if its wearing out. Throwout bearings mainly make noise when you step on the pedal and the harder you push the louder the noise. Thansmission bearings will stop making noise when the clutch is pressed. Never use a "needle bearing" pilot bearing for a GM. These things destroy more input shafts than any other cause!

Ok, so now I have to figure out if I want to mess with it, or just leave it and do my TH400 swap a little sooner. Not like its too much work, but I don't want to pull the trans on my weekend toy to fix a noise then swap out a trans a few months later.....

A clutch was done on it right before I got it. Odds are, if its like the other work I set straight, that pilot bushing was left untouched.

I know that, and that is why I said mine was hydro because he said he inspected his Z bar.
The throw out is my first guess but the sound doesn't quite sound like a throw out, I have had some go out on me and the sound was different.
And now that you mention it, last time I changed clutches and changed my pilot bearing it was thrashed and thetranny was making a very nsty noise.
I replaced it with a bronze bushing.

Well, I picked up a three grove Saginaw off of Craigslist that was pulled out of a 68 camaro when doing a TH400 swap. I got it with the Hurst shifter and everything. It was recently rebuilt. I got it all for $400. A M21 was $1200 so I passed on one for now so I can drive my truck. That will be my project to swap in here pretty quick. Should work perfect. I'm not as tough on them as I use to be.
