Does the adaptor from a SM465/NP205 combo, retain the input bearing on the NP205 or should there be a retaining collar.

Pic's wopuld be nice.

Thanks,Bob.

What year set up?

On the early pre-85, ten spline type the 205 input bearing is held in place by the adapter. The bearing has a snap ring on it that is pinched between the adapter and t-case to hold it.

On the 85+ type there is an aluminum collar retaining the bearing.

yep then yours is held in by the adapter. Suprised me the first time I had my case out and the bearing would almost fall out of there.

10 spline NP205 & 32 spline NP205 up to 85 , on both the input is retained by the adapter.

86-91 32 spline NP205 the input is retained by an aluminum seal housing/ bearing retainer .

just have three of those laying around do ya? Good stuff.

Good info..didn't know there were different sized Figure 8 adaptors either...or do they just look different in this pic.?

Since it looks like you've got two apart, does the T-case side on the pre '85 cases need a stock gasket to keep the adapter from bottoming out before the bolts seat fully? (like the transmission side for the 465)

I can't recall if that side uses a thick gasket or a paper-thin one.

The gaskets that came in the kit I had were the same thickness for both sides of the adapter , and yes both sides require gaskets.

The adapters are the same bolt pattern on the transfercase side , but the input bearing is a different size ,the T400 32 spline input uses a bigger bearing than the SM465 10 spline . The transmission side is totally different.
T400 32 spline pre 86 adapter

SM465 10 spline adapter (not a real good pic ,but the only one I have right now)

Better pic of the 10 spline adapter

Question : I was not aware that the figure eight pattern 32 spline 205's ever came behind a 465 . To the best of my knowledge the only figure eight pattern 32 splined 205's were behind TH400 applications and then in 1985 both 465 & TH400 205's started with the universal round pattern 205's with the longer splined in-put gear . What application and year did that figure eight pattern 465/205 come from ?

Tom, you are correct in your thoughts; the picture leaves an illusion. The drive sleeve is attached to the input, making it look like a long 32 spline input.

Yah , I saw the sleeve on the 10 spline pic . I think I read his post wrong and thought he indicated that GM offered a pre 1985 465/205 32 spline case which just ain't so . My bad , I need to read more carefully.......

You are correct, GM never made a 32 spline NP205/SM465 until 86 & it was the round pattern transfercase. The pictures were to show the difference in the adapters.
