Just a quick question, i have 2 sm465's that i have not personally used yet, they are just sitting here. the one that i plan on using (32 spine) reportedly pops out of 2nd gear (L-1-2-3) all the time and I've been told that this is caused by a worn shifter fork. so, for one is this true? and secondly can i just take out the 32 spline output shaft and throw it in the other 10 spline shaft transmission that is reportedly "perfect"?

The easiest solution would be to swap the entire top shifter cover w/forks from the good to the bad trans.

Once had a 79 c10 2wd that would not stay in what you call 2nd gear. Changes the whole trans. After took it apart found a broken "C" clip on the counter shaft. At the time JC Whitney sold a clamp for the fix as this was a common problem. By removing both pto covers you can get right to the counter shaft and see if the broken clip is in the bottom of the trans.

Glad I wasn't the only one who knew about those special collars J.C. Whitney sold!..I put a few in,they appeared to be made from two peice shaft collars, that had the "ring" machined into them..the busted snap ring is ,ore common for the tranny popping out of second than worn forks are,IMO..

I think this is a common problem with this type of transmission, and about the only thing that ever went wrong with them. I had an NP435 (which is similar in design) and it would pop out of the same gear, but only when you let off the gas. If you kept the throttle on, it would stay it gear. I could usually hold it in gear if I had to though.
