Well, i can't get my tranny into 3rd gear. It is an 83 GMC 3/4 ton pickup in case anybody wonders. I was driving the other night and it just wouldn't go into gear, and i haven't been able to get it in gear since. I can go through the other gears no problem, but not 3rd. I tried shifting into 3rd with the truck off just parked too and it still won't go. I'm thinking something in the shift rails, but i'm not sure. Anybody have any ideas?

this is a very common problem w/ these tranny's. the third gear syncro is prolly shot along w/ the snap rings that keep the gears seperated

Read the last section, it's about the 465's and the third gear problem. Give these guys a call, they can get you straightened out.

And you're close to Allan....
If he doesn't have one, then I've got a spare 465 or two I can sell.

The one he's having problems with came from me.

It drove fine in the Crew Cab it came out of... I'm just wondering if it's a shifter fork issue. I've had a tranny that jammed IN 3rd gear before and wouldn't come out... and dealt with a few others that didn't want to shift. Just replaced the entire top with different shifter forks/rails and that solved it.

I've had others that would grind going into 3rd gear, 4th gear, or even 2nd gear... but not completely refuse to go into a gear.

The shift fork could be worn down to the point rthat it wont push the gears far enough. I had the EXACT same prob a couple o years ago and that was what it was (just swapped trans top/shift forks)
