can a sm 465 from a 2 wheel drive be used as a 4 wheel drive tranny? I have come across a 77 sm465 from a 1 ton 2 wheel drive truck. And I am looking for info on the conversion as to what needs to be done?

Thanks

You would need the main shaft from a 4wd transmission to do that. The output on the 2wd unit would be too short to mate to any transfer-case.

The 2WD tailshaft (which is also the mainshaft) is 35 spline. 4WD versions are 10 spline and 32 spline depending on vintage.

For the trouble of swapping mainshafts it's just a ton easier to buy a 4WD version. They're abundant and cheap.

Just make sure the splines are in good shape or you will be replacing it any way.
