sm465 question

what's the little plug/ vent looking thing right behind the shifter on top of the transmission?? The cap thing on it is loose and i have no idea what it is or what it does. Something i should worry about or no?

Vent, cap should be loose but not pull off super easy.

Well i couldn't pull it off so i'm good i guess but if water gets up there will it fill the tranny??

I'm sure it could, although with only one inlet and no vent, I think it would take quite a bit of time to get much in there.

If you ford that deep, a good idea to vent it, your t-case, diffs, and gas tank up higher.

I've gone up to the doors a couple of times broadside in a stream and never had a problem with water in it.
