I just recently purchased an 87 Jimmy that has a hydraulic sm465 np208 combo in it. The problem is that the sm465 doesn't want to go into L. And when it does go in it then pops out while accelerating. Has anyone had this problem? I'm guessing that the bushings are worn for the shifter? But this is the first sm465 I've had.

L is hard to shift into, its not synchronized. You must be stopped to get it into gear and even then sometimes you have to let the clutch out a little to get the dog teeth to line up.

As for it popping out of low, you might not be getting it all the way into gear.

Kind of an odd problem. The popping out of gear is almost always a third gear issue (2 on the shifter know)

Maybe a previous owner felt forcing it into gear was A-OK regardless of the noises it made?

If I try to put it in L it will not go unless I am trying to put it in L and easing out out of the clutch. As I ease out of the clutch it will then go into L. But as I start rolling ( even if I'm hold the shifter in L ) it will pop out.

granny low is not synchronized as 38377k5 mentioned . try coming to a complete stop, put it down in first (not granny low), then shift it into granny low, if it dont go ease out on the clutch and slide it right into gear. then give it some gas and try to pull away. if that dont go its not engaged and is still in neutral.

Man, I drove semis for a couple years and popping out of gear was what the trannys did soon before needing rebuilt. Does it whine especially loud in any gear? I know that the 465 is not a quiet tranny but you can usually tell. Also, check if there is something physically blocking the shifter from getting fully engaged in L. Maybe a stick jammed underneath. Once in my F350 I got a stick wedged inderneath and it an I couldn't shift at all. Freaked me out thought I busted the tranny. You can get it into L or any other gear for that matter while rolling, even with the clutch in, if you match the rpm's with the speed of the truck. Good luck!!

if it was swapped in check for floor clearence. my truck was conglomorized from 3 trucks and the body was 2wd stuff. my 205 wont go into low unless you force it and even when you do it pops out even if you hold it. i need to hack away at the trans tunnel

If its popping out of Low then its not fully engaged. Check for shifter clearance around the boot. If thats not the issue, then check the shifter itself. Remove it from the tranny and check for wear on the lever.

The previous owner swapped it in from a 700r4. I was planning on checking to see if the shifter was hitting but I haven't made it there yet. I have only tried shifting to L while sitting still. I talked to the previous owner today and he said that he could get it in L and idle it. But as soon as he gave it gas it would then pop out of gear. I haven't tried messing with it yet because I'm trying to get some info from you guys so I'll have some kind of idea of what I could get into.

I would practically guarantee that the shifter is hitting the floor. Remove the screws that hold the shifter boot down and cut/grind some of the floor away so the shifter can go into L.

I'm pretty we cut enough clearance when we installed it but I'd had a few that day also.

I know that in my rig if I'm in granny and catch hell trying to slide it out without clutching. Thats why I'm saying its not going all the way in. Its prob shifter clearance.

I drove it in the yard a little bit ago and it does like what I previously said. when I get some time tomorrow I'll see if the shifter is hitting. It does feel like it is not fully going into L.

if you slide it in and hear a metal to metal noise it probably is hitting. you should also be able to feel it hitting, like i know on my truck you can hear when it engages

Well I took the boot off of the shifter today and it has plenty of clearance. I'm wodering if I can remove the trans. hump and then remove the top of the trans. to inspect the trans.?

Did you take the shifter out and check it?

Is that tranny hump removable?

No I didn't take the shifter out. That's what I was wondering if I could do? The hump doesn't have any bolts from the top. But I thought that there was still a way to remove them. I've got a hump from a K5 and a reg cab that I could put back in.

Under the shifter boot where the shifter goes into the top of the tranny is a ball cup. Push down and turn, then the shifter will pull out.
