Hey guys. I took the shifter cover off a while back to inspect everything in the 465. Trying to put it back on right now with no luck. I know I took the top off halfway in reverse but now I can't get the damn shifter to get into reverse. I've got the trans situated in reverse so I know I'm right there...

The shifter is off and it wants nothing to do with reverse. I'm wondering if the forks are in the wrong place? The reverse fork should be a little behind the last set of forks, pushing the reverse gear halfway out but on the shifter there's no firm click.

It has been a long time since I pulled the gear shift lever and housing off a SM465. I am not sure what you mean by "I've got the trans situated in reverse". From what I remeber the trans needs to be in neutral, and out of reverse before the shift stick is going to line-up properly with all the shift forks. Then you can push down the spring loaded cap, and spin it to lock into the roll pins.

I think you need to have it in neutral to get it right...not positive how you can do that now.
Big screw driver to shift it? I think!?

Dear god. What a workout. Why do I pay for the gym when I can just get a couple of 465s?

I finally got it. So I think. Part of my problem is the tcase adapter isn't on so the output shaft is getting pushed out a bit but it does shift into gear. All gears work but thw shifting is sloppy. Is there an adjustment for that? It was more crisp before I took it apart.

Maybe I need to try it with the adapter on...

That could possibly be the problem, if the output shaft and bearing are trying to slide out of the trans. One problem with "top loader" style trans is that the shift fork shift shafts get scored and wollard out from side loading over time, thus not allowing for smooth sliding across the shaft. I once had a SM465, which cracked a piece off at the shift lever housing...right at the roll pin holes. This was from a PO wrenching real hard on the shift lever, in order to get into gear.

Well I got the adapter on and it seems much better. the shifter still has a good 1/4" of play back and forth...is that normal?

1/4" of play is normal. I had an SM465 with so much play that when I took my hand off the shift lever, it would almost fall back on the seat. I fix that problem by getting a new shift lever and shift lever spring. This made the shift lever stand straight up, like it is supposed to.

I thought my 465 had a lot of play also, until i moved a few others around. Im glad mine is the way it is now.

If you take the cover off its relatively cheap to fully rebuild the shifter housing, new forks, springs, seals, pins etc... Like prolly 75 dollars and a couple hours, made my 465 feel and shift like new

Do you remember where you bought the rebuild kit?

Damn I just put the top back on yesterday. sounds like its supposed to be a little sloppy. Theres a few parts I can replace if I pull the shifter it seems.

No it was like American powertrain or trans something something, it's been over a year or so since I did it.

There isn't one complete kit you can buy, you just order shift forks a small parts kit and anything else you might need, they have a lot of good exploded views on Google for reference
