I just swapped in a 81 sm465/205 into my 87 7oor4/208 k5. in the process I also swapped in a steering column that does not have the mfs. well now my ruck does nothing when I turn the key. does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 81 and 87 ignition

I've had decent luck with the links below, in my sig. Some files apparently aren't real useful (too small to read clearly) but others I've looked at there appear fine.

What is "mfs"?

Sounds like a neutral safety switch issue.

Multi function switch was my guess. I think that's a new name for a column mounted lever/switch/doohickey activator. Ever since the race started to cram as many levers onto a steering column as you could. Guess mounting some stuff on the steering wheel keeps that mess from getting worse on modern cars.

Yeah basically you need to wire your park neutral safety switch through a clutch safety switch now. Or just delete it all together and jump the two 12ga wires together at the park neutral switch.

This is what I have that has worked - seen it on other Chevys too:

  • a switch on my dash that goes from a battery terminal to the hot lead on the HEI
  • a push button on the dash that goes from a battery terminal to the starter solenoid
Startup: flip switch and push button
Shutdown: flip switch

Other than bewildered looks from friends, a good solid setup

Or just jumper your neutral safety switch, and use the factory key switch.

Just in case someone stumbles on this thread somewhere down the road - my switch/button setup had the complicating factor of bypassing the points style resistor power supply for the new HEI distributor.

This is a possibility but I still need to wire my turn signals and headlights up somehow because the steering columns wiring is way different from my old one to this pre 87 style
