borrowed this image from a post in the classifieds.

couple weeks ago i was checking all the fluids in the blazer. squirted a few ounces into the sm465, and stuck my pinky in the sulfur hole to feel where the fluid level was.

oil level was fine but; i could feel one of the gears (the only gear i can reach/touch through the fill hole) just to the rear of the fill hole and prob an inch in from the case wall -felt like a straight cut gear that now is worn and fairly sharp at the ends of the teeth. any idea what gear that would be?

If I remember correctly that’s the reverse idler.
for as long as i can remember, this trans has ground gears a bit when shifting into reverse. sometimes i can double clutch and its better, but just holding the clutch in and waiting accomplishes nothing - it will grind if its going to grind. only time it doesn't do it at all is if the truck is rolling backward a little and the engine rpm is all the way back at lowest idle.

never concerned me much until i stuck my finger into a sharper than average gear the other day. also, occasionally takes some finesse to get into low gear if im stationary. If i remember correctly 1st (low gear) and reverse are not synchro gears in a sm465?

I’ll see if I have any pics of mine apart.
Correct that first and reverse are non-synchro.
I have found if I put it in fourth then into reverse it doesn’t grind. Even though you push the clutch in, the gears are still spinning from drag.

Is it possible that you are feeling the side/edge of the gear teeth and not the crown?

For a reverse gear to get that kind of wear is next to unheard of - it would take an amazing amount of usage and severely worn bearings to achieve that much wear.

And the drive teeth don’t make the grinding noise while engaging - rather it’s the dog-teeth on the sliding collar and mating teeth on the gear that would wear from excessive grinding.

Pop that cover and post up some pics so we all can figure this out with ya.

naaaahhhh probably not gonna happen soon. I'll wait until the motor pops or until i can't trust the trans not to stay in 2nd while compression breaking. they did away with the removable trans tunnel in my version of the K5 -1988

I would have to cut my floor out or remove the trans... which is mucho pain in the ass-o

-edit- you probably meant one of the side covers on the 465? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh maybe!

during one of the next engine oil changes I intend to let some of the gear oil out of the 465 and see if there's a lot of metal in it. If I see anything suspicious I could pop a side plate and have a look. (all the oil up top near the fill plug looks brand new)

I always put it in second gear, then shifted to reverse to avoid the grind...
from a standstill this usually works if im trying to put it in low/first
ive tried 3rd before hitting reverse, but not sure if ive ever tried 4th - will be trying that next time im in the truck

anyway - if i can catch low gear when the truck is still barely moving forward, it slots in like she wanted it.

same for reverse, although its much less frequent to already be in motion traveling rearward and not already be in gear and under power
