having trouble shifting. very hard to shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 1st, and going into reverse. not sure if its the throwout bearing or the syncro's.

thanks

Probably neither one. Well, maybe the throwout.......
Odds are your clutch is out of adjustment and not disengaging all the way. It could also be a problem with your pilot bearing or bushing.

If the input shaft is spinning with any amount of force, then its going to be hard to shift into any syncro gear, and would grind in a non-syncro one.
Also going to be hard to get out of a syncro gear.

Need to describe this issue in more detail - what does it take to eventually get it in gear?

That said, 1st & reverse are not synchronized so they will not fall into gear like the others. I'm betting you don't have a problem, just normal characteristics.

adjusted, not much thread left on the adjuster. thinking its the throwout. but not sure.

This .......hard shifting is usually a clutch issue, my Jeep (SM465) is having the same issue, I'm waiting for time to get a new hydraulic kit put in.

i have a 77 gmc truck and an 80 dodge 465/435 and they shift much easier. i really hate to say it but it looks like i'll be pulling the tranny. dam it. got it about a year and a half ago and the guy said it had a new clutch. i'm hoping it has a pilot bushing and not the bearing style

If the issue was adjustment or the t/o bearing wouldn't the hard shifting be in more than just the unsyncronized gears?

i agree, i meant first gear not low or you could say 2nd. dont remember if its 1,2,3,4 or L,1,2,3

You checked the oil right?

Only probs I've had with my 465 were from the hydraulics leaking or from the oil level being low.

Changed more master and slaves than I should ever have thought possible in the 5-6 years I've had my k-5. Had a master cyl go, and took a lot of pumping and double clutching to get things to move...

it good. but i do need to change it. good idea. i'll drain a little to see if it bad

Actually I meant more like fluid level...
My 465 got really hard to shift once and it was because I didn't have enough oil in it- topped it off and it made a huge difference.
