OK so maybe a 4-53 detroit isnt exactly small physically but in relation it is.

what im wondering about is gearing. Most of the vehicles that had such an engine were low geared, low top speed, and built to move weight.

So if you put one in a relitivly small and light pickup and ran around a 30" rear tire would you still need to gear it low?

This engine would be around 140hp with the right mods but it would have over 400ftlbs of tourque. I would think it would push a lighter pickup pretty easy even with higher gears. Am I wrong to think this?

Ok to put it in a real world application. Start with a 61 2wd short stepside chevy 4-53t detroit engine sm465 trans 2.55 diff gears and a 30" tire.

Is this truck going to be drivable? is it going to be too high geared for the detroit to start out in 2nd gear?

The goal is purely for fun and the sound of the detroit in a rat rodish pickup. I would want it drivable like most any stock vehicle not fast just a cruiser. But I dont want 15 foreward gears and 5 reverse gears

Help me out here guys I dont really know what im doing just have an idea that I would like to do.

Im not familiar with detroits and the power/rpm band would be the key element to consider. I do know the first gen Dodge trucks with the Cummins came with 3.08 rear diffs and a non o/d 727 trans, the later the 518 with O/D. The stock 235/75/16 tires are around 31 tall also. The stock specs on a non intercooled 6BT were pretty similar @ 150HP on the low end to 180 and torque under 400.

The key is torque at the lower rpm's. Even a 4-53 should make enough off idle torque to move a pick-up from a dead start in 4th at idle. Where you need to focus is on cruise rpm. Gonna spend time at 70 mph? Gear it for that. Town only...gear it for that.

Without googling I'm gonna say the 2 stroke Detroits were good for maybe 3600 goverened top end. Good cruise is prolly 2000-2400 max before it'd get really annoying.

Even my lowly 6.2 would start off in 3rd gear with 4.56's and 39.5's. It wasn't ideal, but it wouldn't stall or complain much doing it.

you're not gonna run the 60-62 hood are you?

I dont have a 60-62 hood right now but if I did I would deffinatly run it. I have only seen 1 other hood like that locally on a restored truck. Because its less popular is the reason I would use it. But unless one just falls in my lap in good shape I will use the 63-66 hood that came with my truck.

On the detroit Thats good info. I guess I should aways do a search here and on youtube before I get nervous.

My fav video since its close to what Iwant to do.

Detroits are badass, but definitely not light motors. A 4-53 weighs in at over 1000lbs. Also, without an overdrive, you might not get it going fast enough to drive on the highway. Figure around 2300-2500 rpm.

And thats exactly why i was asking about higher gears. Its easy to gear it to run 65mph at 2500rpm but if it wont start out its not the solution.

Okay google knows everything so here's some numbers.

The rpm split with a 465 is 1300 from 2nd to third and 1000 from third to 4th. so on the up shift at 2500 you go down to 1200 into third and 4th drops you to 1471 from 2500.

Gears- 65mph is 2500 with 3.47's and 2200 with 3.02's and 1800 with 2.47's. So a 2.75 is going to get you about 65 at 2000rpm.

So startability in second gear on level ground is 3.58x2.75=9.845 Not great but for a street driver not horrible. It would be fairly driveable really due to the fast torque rise of the engine. And if you did a turbo on that thing even better.

HA! It's going SLOW. The engine itself is pretty much together. I should have two weeks off after I get back from the big sandbox in mid May. I'm planning on putting it in then. Still don't know what trans I'm going to use. The RTO9513 that I have is just too big. I'll probably end up doing a smaller RTO6610 or I'm looking into using an NV4500. And, still have to figure out a way to run the air starter, intercooler, fuel lines and figure out a way to mount the divorced 205. Now if I can find some extra time to spend on school and the wife, I'll be good to go.
