my pieced together 350 (71 block / the rest, ???) converted to tbi smells to high hell of raw gas and the exhaust is pretty potent too. Some of the things im looking into are a bad catalytic converter, i know there are leaks in the exhaust, what else should i look into. Timing is set up right, could the computer be feeding too much gas so its not able to burn it fully? Just looking for some insight.

Didn't see the year of the vehicle the engine was swapped into , but if the vehicle has an evap system in place , that could be the cause. Especially if the raw gas swell is most noticable when the vehicle is parked. What about the O2 sensor, is it hooked up , is it a good sensor, if the sensor is telling the computer that it is sensing a lean condition the ECM will try to compensate. Even if the check engine light never came on , thats not to say that the sensor is any good. Post up some more in depth facts and specs, and when the smell is encountered. If its when the back window is down in a blazer or Suburban, good F'n luck, when you figure out how to eliminate that you are the man.

this is an 88 k5. the smell comes from all over. only when im running the truck, but its a strong gas smell in the exhaust and from under the hood. when i bought it the cat had been stripped. i don't even think the o2 sensor is hooked up. i have to do a little more research..

No 02 hooked up means it will run rich.
