new to forum, just retired from scca to try 4x4, have 90 350/4sp man, driving on hwy yest and got burning grease smell, then loud whining noise when off the gas, and now when going from stop truck jumps/bangs as a auto trans does when slipping. clutch is not slipping. fluid correct on front/rear. nothing visible broken. i have much exp in auto repair from racing but almost zero when comes to 4x4, i need to know where to start. i read thru prev posts but couldnt find related, and i hope i am posting in correct spot, thanx in advance

Have you checked fluid level in these? You don't mention shifting issues, so my guess would be critically low fluid level in T-case...those have a slip yoke rear which often leak a little.

checked

ok, checked transfer case and is good....closer inspection is as follows...the smell seems to be coming from rear axle area...i have slatter of what i believe to be either grease or gear lube on undercarriage in same area, it appears to be leaking from front of rear axle where ujoint enters, i drove around block and am getting noticable shake/grind when slowing down and a jump when starting from stop....maybe combinations of couple things?

i have to assume this would account for the vibration/grind or should i pull the spider gear while i am at it?

If it's bump and grinding, the damage is done and going to get worse. repalce it while it still moves under it's own power. The axle that is.

First, make sure it isn't a bad u-joint.

But, from the way you describe it, the rear end is toast. The bearings are likely gone: the whine you're hearing is poor gear contact (which has likely already destroyed the ring and pinion) and the "jump" you're getting when you first start moving is probably the pinion skipping over broken ring gear teeth.
