Smog question

short answer - not likely but possible

explenation - bad ignition system would cause a poor, or badley timed spark, meaning incomplete combustion, meaning lots of unburned hydrocarbons which the o2 sensor may interprate as a rich condition. responce, computer leans it out to bring the perceived rich condition back into line.

but like i said, its a stretch.

so far, the only times i have had a lean condition code on my TBI truck, is when the fuel pump started to die. Low fuel pressure, causing it to run lean, it still ran, but didn't have the "get up & go" it was suppose to have, and at times it would spit and sputter, backfire out the TBI if i forced it to go, was a real pain.
Kept throwing various codes for different conditions, kept changing different sensors until i just decided to change out the fuel pump, and all was great from then.

I haven't personally had it happen yet, but i would be willing to bet a bad o2 sensor could give that reading too...

also, when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? if that were to get clogged youd get a lean burn condition.

For starters, Id swap out the fuel filter, and put a bottle of quality fuel injector cleaner in the tank. and see if that aleviates the problem.

short of that, previous advise to check for error codes is solid. although if you already know youre running lean, id guess you already did that, unless youre diagnosing from an emissions test.
