I just bought a replacement motor for my 88 k5 it was from Alaska the exhaust manifold does not have the smog port but the old motor did can I run it with out it or should I pull the manifolds off the old motor? any advice is greatly appreciated

Since you're in Ca. you'll need your original manifolds with the smog port in order to pass emissions testing if your rig was so equipped from the factory.

honestly jmjkorosco, if you dont want the smog equipment there, you can take it off. you will just not pass smog. but you're in riverside, There's tons of shops there and in San Bernardino that would smog it! so its up to you, do you want to keep the smog equipment and pass smog. or take it off. and find someone to Make it pass.. but ofcourse the "Right" way would be smog equipment. Ive never had any smog equipment on any of my blazers. the one I have now is the first. because it passed with flying colors..

I would love to know where VIA PM you can take it to find someone who will pass it with no smog equipment. Mine passes the actual emissions test but fails the visual inspection because of timing isn't at 5 degrees. Problem is the truck won't run at 5 degrees. Needs to be at about 12 to run clean and well. (Damn GM crate engine) The only thing that isn't stock on the engine is the street legal edelbrock headers on the engine. I am actually contemplating parting the truck out which is a shame because it is a very clean rig.

Only thought of that because the last balancer I bought has as far as I can tell, timing marks that are just painted on, instead of stamped in.

Even easier would be to install a timing tape. Have you verified with 100% certainty that your harmonic balancer hasn't spun and the timing marks are actually off from where they should be? The only way to verify this is with a piston stop, and a degree wheel.

No I haven't but If i go to that much trouble I might as well replace it. That still isn't a guarantee that the new one won't be junk though.

It is always possible to buy a bad part but in this case it's doubtful because it's not that the timing mark gets marked wrong it's the fact that the parkerized rubber between the crank hub and inertia ring becomes weak and oil saturated over the years and the inertia ring spins on the rubber thus making the marks incorrect since the relation to the crank hub has now been changed by the inertia ring spinning.

Sure, if you don't already own the proper tools for checking this or have a friend with them then it would be eaiser to just replace the harmonic balancer but that could be throwing money away since you don't know for sure if it's even a problem.
