Snap-On

im hard on tools i break **** all the time... ive destroyed a 3/4" snapon ratchet before a few 1/2" ratchets and tons of 3/8" rathcets. i broke the tip off my matco 42" prybar once too. just to name a few.
 
I'm hard on my lesser stuff, but I try to treat my Snap-on stuff with respect- to a point. I don't put them in my box until theyve been cleaned religiously, and try to avoid abusive uses. Everything in my box has a specific place- and I can tell at a glance if anything has been tampered with. I wouldn't dream of using my Snappy screwdrivers as prybars, for example. My other stuff though? Anything goes. In the field when a repair has to be done and time is money however, you gotta do what you gotta do. Stuff I know is gonna be destroyed I just get from HF. Also, if someone wants to borrow something, I point at my Craftsman box- no way in hell theyre using my Snap-on stuff.
 
Snap On guy pissed me off this week. Have an $80 blue point air gauge tire filler. Dropped it and it stuck at 20psi. I love the damn thing but it does this pretty easily. Anyway, "oh yeah I don't have one at this second, just sold the last one, but I will order you a gauge".... yeah didn't bother showing up this week. ****er, been without a tire gauge of my own for over a week now. good thing I have no work to do...
 
damn snapon guys.. lol...i've been in the shoes of just selling something then someone else needs one... makes you wish you could have an endless inventory sometimes...
 
I can understand that just fine, just pisses me off that he didn't show up the next week. That and the new Snap-On guy we have is a bit of a tool. Doesn't have a concept of "personal space" (neither does our Mac guy...) and the idea of discounting anything is like insane to him. One of the main reasons I do business with the Matco guy. I buy so much he throws me a discount whenever he can. or maybe he just changes **** around a little to make me happy, either way it makes me happy.
 
i know the "make people happy game"... like this week, im throwing darts with people for discounts on certain tools..
 
yea well, he just lost my business entirely. he showed up today. when I asked him about my gauge he stared blankly at me... then I showed him my air gauge... he said "hmm I didn't order that, guess I forgot". So yet another week without it.

is that in the Snap On training program? must be, because i've heard it from 3 different Snap On guys. Mac guy, whisper something in his crowded truck, and he'll be able to repeat it word for word back to you in 3 weeks. GREAT guy to deal with.
 
the worst thing is when I said "well I need a freaking gauge" he said "I remember that you needed one..." Oh and he remembered that I've been shopping air drills.
 
check out Mac for air drills. i just bought a 1/2" air drill, and they gave me the 3/8" air drill free. 140.00 out the door for both, of course i added keyless chucks to both of them to the tune of $60. so for $200 i'm into 2 nice air drills. i love em!
 
if you want a strong 1/2" air drill, check out the snap-on PDR5A... you can go with something like the blue-point at856a for much less money, but all you get is a mac/matco top of the line, which isnt much...

I do that with my Craftsman 13mm and Detroit turbo nuts all the time. Still have yet to break anything.

I just had all Craftsman and Harbor Freight special stuff. When it breaks, I buy a Snap On thing to replace it. No sense in buying $8,000+ in tools when you're just starting out...because that's another payment you have to deal with. Plus, the 50% off deal, at least how it was explained to me, stops at a certain point, for example, you buy up to the max of $8,000 of tools and pay $4,000...after that, it's full price.

Snap On, Matco and Mac tools don't suck...it's just how much you spend on the dumb stuff that adds up. Honestly, with sockets and wrenches, I'd go Craftsman or HF for them...only buy from Snap On the stuff you CAN'T get at Sears or HF. I wouldn't even bother with a Snap On box yet...anything you get, you probably are not going to keep forever since you are going to be expanding anyway. A Craftsman box will last you more than a couple of years, and that's all you need it to do till you get the big box you'll keep forever. Get started first, then upgrade...because if you have a $500+ a month tool payment but still don't have all the wrenches or special tools you need to fix things, you're up a creek.
 
thing is a two bay craftsman box is like $200 cheaper than a SnapOn box. I will give it to Snap On, their boxes just feel like the best ones.

89GMCSub's theory is the one I've been working on since I started. I bought a LOT of Craftsman tools. And I've been buying specialty **** bit by bit since I started. When something breaks, I replace it with a Matco, Mac, Snap On tool. So far the only thing I've had to replace was my 1/4" ratchet. Craftsman one took a crap so I bought a Matco fine tooth one. I love the thing, but at $60 for a 1/4" ratchet, not something I'd buy off the bat. I'm just going to keep filling until my box is so full I can't find a damn thing, then figure out what kind of room I need. Which could be soon, haha. I need to break down and buy a balljoint press kit, which is going to leave my 2 bottom big drawers on my box, FULL.
 
buy a BJP1... from your snapon guy, all the adapters in ONE CASE and they snap together so you dont need an extra hand like with the otc set... 595$... great set, even has a greasable bodyshaft... with zerk.....

buy a snap-on box, they ARE the best, lots of testing and work goes into them, and they're worth more when it comes time to trade up
 
yeah I used one of those BJP1 sets the other day. It was sweet. The snapping together was really nice. That and the greaseable factor. I will shop, may buy that one. However, I don't believe it will fit in my box... I will have to reborrow it and see.
 
I started my tool collection with Craftsman. Once I had pretty much everything they made, I started building another set from Snap-on, starting with things that Craftsman didn't offer, and ratchets. I have a couple of Craftsman boxes, and when I outgrew them, I went Snap-on, mainly because the Craftsman professional box that was big enough for my stuff was almost as much as the Snap-on box I purchased. Someday far in the future, I would like to purchase a Snap-on KRL series set, because to me they are a work of art. I've had a few different Snap-on Dealers, and some of them are dicks, and they didn't get any of my money. They all start out that way I think, because they want to feel you out, they get a lot of guys who buy tools and get delinquent with payment and stuff, and I can see where that could be a big PITA. The majority of my stuff I bought from a dealer in Iowa, who was outstanding in my opinion. He still gets my business, if I need anything, which is rare anymore.
 
ive got the otc set, from before the bjp1 and it works, but what a difference the bjp1 makes in time and effort, and sanity
 
I use Snap-on
John Deere (made for by Stanley)
and Ingersol Rand.

I wouldn't touch Craftsman with a 10 foot pole. Too much money for cheap junk with their standard stuff, and their Pro line isn't any better than John Deere that costs less than their standard junk.
