I have always ran studed M/T type tires for the winter and had good luck with them in the snow, I have 35 1250 15's but getting time for a new set.My queston is, what tires do you guys up north run? A/T'S or M/T'S?

1 of 2 choices from what i have read or seen.

bfg a/t is #1 for snow plow guys thay love them for traction in snow plowin.

new runner up the past 2 years or so same basic tire but cheeper is general grabber at2 and bonus its pind for studs .

over 50% of snow plow guys love these 2 tires for snow and dd type use. and thay both wear good if taken care of. some report with bfg that thay can get 40-50k miles .

BFG Commercials work very well on my plow truck, one of the best tires I've run. They don't come in good sizes for most people though.

Toyo a/t's. Dang good tire imo. Snow traction is great, predictable and manageable skidding characteristics. On the street and not too agressive offroad in snow, the best thing this side of purely snow tires. They're good enough I went for a second set this fall, last set had just shy of 50k miles, and I would have kept them if it was spring time, prolly could have gotten another 7k or so out of them. But bald tires do no good in the white stuff.:doah:

I run BFGoodrich Rugged Trails on my 1971 CJ5, 1994 S10 ZR2 and 2000 XJ. I am satisfied with them. I used to run the Cooper Discovery ATs on the XJ but several years ago when they changed tread patterns my tire guy told me they had tracking problems on some vehichles and the XJ was one of them.

I have 35 X 12.50 X 15 Dunlop Mud Rovers on my Jimmy. I only have a couple hundred miles on my rebuilt tranny so I don't want to beat it just yet but I had to test Jiminy after last week's 19" snow storm. I was satisfied with the results.

In my limited experience, I would say it's a tough call. I really liked how M/T's worked in the slushy snow on the roads, and they didn't even have studs! But, on ice, they definitely had less traction then the BFG A/T tires I used.

I hear the key to snow is lots of biting surfaces, like A/T style tires, and if you sipe them they are even better. Then again, studded M/T's might be my favorite... I will say though that I am enjoying the A/T's more on long highway trips. Quieter, smoother ride, makes it more enjoyable overall. Something to consider if you don't have a set of dedicated snow tires for the winter.

Good luck in your decision!

This is what I'm running on my daily driver K5:
Trailcutter M+S

I have them studded as well.
Best tires I have ever run in the winter here (I commute on the highway to a larger city, so pretty much every type of driving)
Unfortunately the largest size they come in is 31" tall. :doah:

Trailcutter does offer an M/T that is studdable and comes up to 33" tall but I can't comment on how they run in the winter because I haven't run them.

I will say that I don't recommend 33" kumho A/T as I had poor traction last winter which is why I opted to buy a good set of winter tires this year. These are what my kumhos look like: (I'll stick to using them in the summer)

I always ran MT's and siped them. Worked great. Soft rubber plus siping = lots of traction and the MT tread and voids = chew through the soft ****.

Only MT's I never siped were Interco TrXus MT's due to their excellent siping and the HighTec Retreading MT's with the added traction granule thingies. STUCK to the road.

I agree on the mileage, my buddy was getting great mileage from his, he had 3 sets and the worst set he got 50k and the best set he got 80k, and that was down to a hair from the wear bars.
And he couldn't be happier with the performance on wet and snow covered roads.
I have a set now that I will be using, it's a few years old but hopefully it's not dry enough to be a problem, will report on how well they do with my driving style.
