Most of you know the orange '75 F250 in my sig pic is my dad's project truck... punched out 390, 4 speed, 4.10's, 35's, etc...
I've always joked around with him that he'd blow out the rear end one day b/c of how much torque it has and how hard it puts the power to the ground...
Well sure enough today of all days (its been pouring down rain) something grenaded in the rear end. There's a nice grinding noise when the truck rolls and there is gear oil pouring out from behind the passenger side hub cap.

Point being I know its a Ford but guys like Wes know a lot about them too... would a 14ff fit width wise? I know stuff like brake line fittings and spring perches would probably need to be changed but the thing I'm concerned about it width...

Ok, I'll get carnage pics soon but we're just brainstorming about new rear ends since this D60 couldn't handle it...

I would imagine it would be similar widths, don't fords come with the big dana70? if so maybe that would be the way to go?

Alot of the older F250's came with D60 rears. Advice would be go bigger. D70, D80, Sterling 10.25", 14bff.

ya, im not much of a ford person, but id put a ford rear end in it.i dont like to cross breed my truck.A sterling or something ford but bigger. im sure a junkyard has a cheap one.

Yeah Remington... after I talked to him last night he said he wants to find a newer 10.25 to put under it...

I don't have time this weekend to pull it apart (and its been pouring down rain) but I've been trying to figure out what happened... I'd assume he snapped an axle shaft or something in the carrier b/c when you roll the truck you hear a clink clink clink...but with the gear oil coming out from behind the passenger side hub cap I'm not sure...

I'll pull the cover and wheels off after we get through this crazy weekend and take pics...

I found some old pictures of his truck on my photobucket account... it's before we cleaned it all up (these are from the night we brought it home)...but you might be able to identify it...

Yeah its a great truck... and I thought my '85 was easy to work on but man oh man these old 70's fords are a piece of cake... and parts are dirt cheap too.

I hate admitting I like any Ford at all, but if I were to own one, it would be one of those old Ford pickups. They're just neat looking.

You're kidding, right?

The D60 under that Ford fragged. Guess what kind of rear end my '69 GMC had from the factory?

(I guess I won't even mention that it now has a Chevy rearend, a Dodge front axle, and a transfer case out of an International. Inbred bastard!)

Avery, sad to hear the rear quit. Its no surprise though. I'm gonna go ahead and bet the culprit are the side gears in the carrier and/or the splines on the shafts.
You see, all these D60 rears in Fords have 16 splines. No rear came from the factory with 35 splines but the aftermarket like Dynatrac, Currie, etc., etc.

Your dad is on the right track with wanting to install a 10.25 Sterling rear. These are already in comparison to the 14 FF and D70 but at a quarter inch smaller gear. They have more splines than the D60's. Parts are readily available in both stock and aftermarket.

You may be able to find any other D60 rear out of any Ford truck, 2 and 4wd and may or may not have to relocate the spring perches. All these rears in the Fords are the same. Just the Highboys have a narrower perch than the rest of them. You could possibly find this kind of rear for cheaper and quicker than you can find a Sterling rear.

I'm still gonna say the side gears fragged inside the carrier. I was watching a pair of NOS side gears, 16 splines, on eBay that never sold and the starting price was something like $15. Now I wished I bid on them so they could be on your way. :doah:

Thanks for the ideas Wes... Once we pull it apart I'll let you know if your guess was correct :)

Honestly...why not just use a 14FF? Sure it wouldn't be "pure" but who cares? Cheaper and just as much work to install as a different rear end that didn't come in the truck from the factory.

That's what I wanted to do but I'm sure he'll want to keep it "pure"... at least in the Ford aspect.
Although I see where you're coming from since spring perches and such will need to be moved anyways due to the fact that it's a Highboy.

If it were me, I'd keep it Ford, too. Just like the GM saying, it can be the same with Ford: "Keep your Ford all Ford."

Bah. Why pay extra for an axle that's got no real advantages over a 14FF while costing more for parts, lockers, gears, etc?

I had time to pull it apart tonight and I was surprised at what I found...

He managed to shear all of the bolts holding the axle shaft into the hub!

The bolts have three lines on the head w/ an "LL" stamped in the middle... is that some special grade 8? I couldn't figure out what "LL" was.

Its a Full Floating D60 rear end (as we already knew) BUT look at the axle shafts... its obviously a different D60 than what came in it from the factory... I counted and its 28 spline...

So I pulled the two nuts, locking tab and bearing out then slid off the drum...

I tossed the drum in my k10 and I'm taking it with me to work tomorrow. I'll see what we can do about getting the broken studs out tomorrow and if we can't get them out then we'll get a new drum...
