So have I been wrong all along?

A few years ago, I was in a junkyard, and I saw a shifter inside a 2wd one ton early 80s chevy, and the pattern was L-1-2-3-OD. I took a pic of the shifter knob with my old cell phone, (I don't have it here right now). I think there was a factory option in around 79 to mid 80s, overdrive unit for 2wd one ton pickups. The overdrive was a Doug Nash, bolted to the back of the sm465. I just did a search on the Internet and couldn't find much. Somebody on CK5 must have some info about it.

That truck could have that transmission.
 
Actually that was a np883 or 833 ( never can remember) and they came in Chevy trucks in the early 80s. My grand father had one behind a 6.2 and it would get 25mpgs and break every time it was hitched to something.

This is what I remember also. Not dependable.
 
The 883 transmission is another rare one in chevy trucks, it was a 4 speed overdrive, 1-2-3-OD. I think it would only be found in a half ton. It was a mopar transmission with a chevy bolt pattern bellhousing. I have a dodge 1/2 ton with that transmission behind a slant 6. I say it should only be found in 1/2 tons because it was a mopar "car" transmission. After the 70s gas crunch, Chrysler took the old muscle car 4 speed a833 (4th gear was 1:1) and changed the gear ratios and it became 1-2-3-OD. It was used in dusters, aspens, etc, and 1/2 ton trucks, powered by slant 6 or 318s. Somehow in the 80s gm adapted the mopar trans into gm trucks. In my underpowered dodge, the trans is annoying to drive, the rpm drop between 2nd and 3rd sucks.
 
I came very close to buying a 1982 K10 I saw in a local junkyard,that had a red block 6.2 diesel and the A833 overdrive 4 speed in it..first and only one I'd ever seen in a GM truck,I had seen some in the Dodge vans that we had at the junkyard that AT&T junked behind slant sixes,and in the Volare's and Dusters,but was unaware till then GM ever used them!..

I ran home to get the 500 bucks to buy the truck,30 minutes later when I retirned,it was flat as a pancake..I think they crushed it as soon as they knew I wanted it--:mad:..junkyards here SUCK for that,they think its a joke to squash something they could have sold..to them everything is "junk",no matter how "rare" it might be--only something like an old muscle car they might spare from the crusher--to keep for themselves more often than resale..

Mayhe the tranny & transfer case wasn't a good one,but it had to be worth something--I imagine finding the adapter to couple the two together would be dam near impossible now..and those high nickel content red 82 diesels with the course thread injectors are not a everyday find either..
 
I remember a odd OD manual in some 80's vettes too. I test drove one 20 years. I wound up with an auto crossfire POS version that I couldn't get rid of fast enough :haha:

The Doug Nash o/d that's I have seen where electric. Like a gear vendor. I believe there is a 465/Doug/205 for sale on pirate right now.

The early nv4500 had L-1-2-3-OD on the knob. An early Clark or eaton medium duty trans 5spd would be easy to swap into a 2wd. But they are usually 1-2-3-4-5 or L-1-2-3-4.

That was the old 4+3 transmisson. It was a standard four speed with an automatic OD that would engage on gears 2-4. It has a following, although a reputation for not being the most robust setup. Our family had an 83 Volvo wagon with a push button engaged OD, it worked pretty well, I think the switch required replacement once.
