So, i bought an m1008 off of 84cucv and went to go pick it up today, (him and his dad are awesome btw) and i live on eastern long island, he lives in jersey.. So, i get up early, get there and get the title, go to dmv and get temps so i can drive it home. DMV takes awhile, finally get it and so on, get in the truck and go to drive home with my friend following me..

I get to the nj turnpike and since then everythings going fine, i notice a small vibration around 45mph but its no biggie. About a mile or two down the highway it starts dropping out of gear, stop, start going again, and it does it again, pull over and check the tranny fluid, bone dry. Obviously im pissed at this point and before i left i asked them about fluids and they assured me they were all checked and fine. So i say whatever, give the truck a little break since i know its running hot, and limp it like 2 miles to an autozone (keep in mind its in camo with no plates on the highway). I pour in some atf, take it for a test drive around the parking lot and it shifts fine, get back on the road. About 2 blocks away it starts acting up again and we bring it right back to autozone. I look under the truck and i see a bolt missing off the the pan and it leaking out of the rear of the pan. I call them up and they tell me there gonna bring a bolt and some tools and hopefully ill be good to go. So they get there and we get under the truck with some tools and a flashlight, and as hes putting the bolt in, i see a massive crack along the tranny on the drivers side, just ahead of the adapter, top to bottom. So at this point we had it towed to his house and were gonna figure it out from there. 84cucv also noticed the shaft had a few dents in it...

So, i cracked the case of a TH400... Im not sure if the vibrations from the driveshaft did this (though i doubt it, because the vibrations were not that bad at all), or perhaps the bolt came out, draining the fluid and then the case tore itself apart running hot. I did have it sustained at 55mph. Personally i think the military may have tapped the case with the forklift and it wasnt noticeable until the truck was up to speed. Now i need a tranny and the shaft resleaved. I dont blame 84cucv at all, his dad drove it around town without a problem, i think it was something that was pretty much undetectable until it was too late.. what does everyone else think?

Really want opinions on what could have caused this..

Its funny, i wanted to purchase one of these privatley to avoid the bs with the government just throwing these trucks around, and now we both get bit in the ass anyway.. meh. Ive waited months i guess i can wait longer

I've bought 5 surplus trucks (2 M880, 2 M1008, & 1 M1009) and the way they handled it is amazing that they are able to run at all. I'd say it was bad luck, unfortunately that doesn't fix the trans. Personally, I'd hope the seller would help me get it to my house and I'd eat the rest. If he has a spare trans it would be cool of him to sell it to you cheep. (But that is not something I would expect.)

Sorry to hear about it. It really is a downer when something you just bought breaks.

Are the support rods still attached from the convertor cover to the engine? What about the rod from the t-case to the bell bolt? If these are missing a cracked trans case is in order.

im not sure, 84cucv and his dad have it at there house in jersey. Im not even sure where those are so i couldnt check. The crack was by the tcase/tranny adapter, not near the engine, I know some but not alot obviously, id have to wait and hear from him unless 84cucv posts up the results of the inspection in this thread.

Heh, i was waiting for you to post here, any opinions on the cause? Anyone else?

The greatest cause for a cracked trans case is the lack of the support rods as i've already stated. Another thing that can cause a trans case to crack is having two different kinds of mounts IE: engine mounts rubber and t-case mount urethane or vice versa. All mounts must be of the same material. It is tortional stress that cracks the trans case usually.

interesting, so you dont think it was from running hot/dry?

doubtful, my 74 that i bought for 500 bux had a cracked th350 in it and there were 2 bent drivelines installed under there, bad bushings, and no support bars, go figure.

What did you pay for the truck? I believe thats the same truck my buddy was gonna buy. Yeah 84 is a really nice guy he lives down the road from me.

2600, got few spots of rust but i think its a perfect canidate for a restoration, just need a tranny now meh

Maybe you should just get a trans core fron the wrecking yard, and rebuild it. you know that the trans in the truck works ok, it just has the crack. Pick up a repair manual from autozone and if the oil in the trans is not burnt, take all the guts from the first trans and put them in the second. Its not too tough to do. I had to swap the output shaft on my turbo 400 to the short shaft to fit the 203. Its way easier than you might think.

Unfortunately, forklift damage is very common with surplus trucks and it may not always surface right away. The crack was probably started but didn't take off until the vibration plus the highway run combined to finish it off.

I totally agree, it easier than you think.

one tricked i piced up was to hang the tranny up with a hook in the wall, that way as you are slipping all the pieces back in, in order, the gravity feeds them in and you dont have to work as much trying to center them and slip them in.

i turned a 2wd t350 into a 4x4 tranny by changing the rear shafts.look for broken planetary gears or anything like that and change them for the good ones you just took out...clutch packs are not too expensive and you basically have a rebuilt trans and more knowledge under your belt...thats how i looked at it...i wouldnt hesitate to do it again if i couldnt find a good used cheap tran when i need it.
