So I did the Pontiac alternator upgrade

subscribed.
Good luck with that.
This thread started out in 2006, someone revived it in 2008, and there have been no posts since.............

Sysops, seriously, we need some kind of indicator when a thread is brought back to life after over 2 years.
I often don't look at the date in the corner before I post a reply.

Hey now, it's a good thread even if it IS necro'd :haha:

Course, the big alternator went into the Blazer at some point, but it's still doing its thing. Heck, on the 350 it was a bolt-up, no bracket fab required.

Ordered one of these alternators tonight. And it's been 26 months since this thread has been posted in. :)

Some time ago I went with a larger alt in my '87. Is there a larger bolt in alt for an '87...like that 140 amp? I am going to want juice and I'm worried that the larger stock one will not work.

aaand in my case, I'm using high capacity stock-type alternators again, I think they're nominally 94A. The bracketry was easier for my older trucks.

My truck is a big block, but it has the old style alternator, I think the Pontiac unit should be a bolt in. I'm running an electric fan and truck has windows/locks/ac and some other electrical draining bull****.

How do I wire this thing up?? I'm headed to the junk yard to get a pigtail now. My stock plug in is melted.

Not to be a pest, but is this a direct bolt in for either of the two stock ones a K would have? Mine is an '87, and even though I just want to get it on the road, this is an upgrade I want to do.

My TPI setup uses different bracketry than the truck setups, so I can't comment on the "bolt in" aspect directly. I would *think* that with the correct pulley, proper "clocking" of the bolt holes, and the brackets from a small block equipped truck that used the CS130/144 series, it would be a bolt in.

Of course, that does not cover the wiring, but that is a minor issue.

You guys looking at putting a CS130/144 might want to look at the AD244 from the newer LS motors. I just swapped the CS130 from my l31 to a 145 amp AD244. The housing is a lot bigger (more airflow) along with some other things I read about on Pirate like doing higher amps at idle.

This is the one I bought.

According to Summit and Tuff Stuff's website, they're made in USA, although there weren't any markings on the one I bought. It looked like a new casting though :dunno: and it didn't say China either.

They have the same bolt pattern and plug as the CS alternators, but the housing is about 30% bigger. I had to move my heater hose about an inch on my '96.

I will really have to read up more on this, but if that's a bolt-up, I would do it, too. Not yet, though...gotta get the dang thing on the road. I've subscribed to this to see what you guys come up with. I'm certain that's a serpentine set-up, yeah?

Well it looks like it's the same 5 rib setup used on some late 80's GM products that weren't serpentine but still used the ribbed belt.

IIRC, on the CS-series, you could put the stock V-belt pulley on them if that is what you are running. Ribbed is technically better, but I'm not sure if at even full output a v-belt would be an issue due to the alternator.

Not to milk a dead horse, but I need some enlightenment. Do I need to ad a resistor and or a bulb online with the sense wire? My 1990 v3500 has a gauge. The wiring diagrams I'm seeing all show this as a clean sheet install, like the vehicle never had a charging system on it. Id like to get this installed tomorrow.

I'm not real familiar with the later truck alternator wiring, but didn't your truck come with a CS130 or 144?

The 1990 or 1991 instrument cluster I have already has a charge indicator bulb (which is what the CS series needs) in the former clock position of the cluster, which leads me to believe that they were wired properly for the CS-series alts. Or at least are wired such that it would be a painless swap.

Finally did this today. I think my original alternator finally crapped the bed. hacked up the factory bracket. Gotta go pick up a turnbuckle tomorrow. Pretty much plug and play, didn't have to dick around putting a light or resistor inline. Puts out 14.2 with the heater on high, wipers and high beams on.
