When I hit the in button it goes out and the out button goes in:confused:. It's a warn hs9500i. The in button makes the winch spin cw lead end. Is this the way it is suppose to spin? Does it matter? Can I just take the switch out and flip it over? Thx!

When you go in, does the cable wind up on the bottom of the drum?

Sounds like someone spooled the winch incorrectly. The wire needs to come off the drum from the bottom of the drum.

I was thinking it spun the other way is all. I thought the cable went to the top. I have a lot of time in the winch mount and there is no way i can change it now. You can see it in my build tread. Sorry no linky cause I'm on my phone. So now the question is since I have it mounted feet forword does it matter that when I spool my wire on it will be backwards? Any internal strength issues?

you need to get a picture of it. depends which way you have it mounted. i assume the high cover is to the back of the truck, but is it upside down or right side up.

I was about to say that if you had it mounted feet down you would definately have to respool the winch correctly. I am pretty certain that since you have it mounted feet forward you can keep it spooled backwards, it will just be hard to remember that in is out and out is in unless you relabel the controller. I would send Warn an e-mail and ask them for certain and make sure you let them know it is mounted feet forward.

Here is a picture of how the winch is mounted but the winch wasn't on in this pic.

The winch has the warn label up with the motor on the left side and the freespool lever on the right (drivers) side. I was under the assumption while building my mount the winch spooled the other way. Now that I realize I was very wrong I guess I will email warn.

If I take the switch out and flip it over then it will be correct but that is a little more rigged than I prefer.

Here is a link to my build thread.

WELL PISS!!!!!! I just got off of the phone with warn and they said if I am spooling in under load the wrong way then it will be acting against the brake which will cause problems. ****! I guess I will have to cut a new hole, weld up the old one, get a new bumper and remount the fairlead. Thanks guys!

Generally speaking, a low slung winch should pull in over the top of the spool. Among other things, this lets the fairlead be on top instead of hanging down below the winch.
Some worm drive winches have a brake that must be reversed if the winch is to be used in reverse.
I think the Warn has a brake that releases when you turn it on, so that is not a problem.
Another potential problem is if the gearbox has oil in it. I don't know if your winch does or not.
If it does, mounting it in certain positions could starve the gears or cause leaks.
Otherwise, you can just swap two wires on the winch motor to get it to run the other way.

Ok, posted that one, and then saw yours. Did you ask if the brake could be reversed?
My Braden PTO winch has a brake on the end of the worm that is reversible. You just take the end cap off and turn the guts around and it works in the opposite direction.
Surely Warn would have mentioned that, but you never know. I would be worth another phone call to make sure before you rebuild everything.
